Nov 28 05 11:26 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	"There is a Special Edition of Forbidden Planet coming..." I suspect that this may be the oldest hoax in internet history. I'm sure the digitalbits started running that artwork around 2003. The Forbidden Planet Special Edition stories go back at least that far. I'm not aware that there has EVER been anything OFFICIAL about this. When asked for the source of the story, folks will invariably point to the digitalbits artwork. From there, the story often goes that it was "mentioned" in a chat or "appeared on a list". It seems that everbody has announced the FORBIDDEN PLANET Special Edition...except Warner Brothers.

Nov 29 05 1:05 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	A long while back, Warners told me they intended to put out FORBIDDEN PLANET in 2006, and I helped 'em find certain things to use as extras. HOW far it's progressed since then ... WHY it hasn't yet been announced ... WHETHER or not it's still in the cards ... I'm afraid I don't know the answers to those questions, I haven't talked to anybody there about it in a dog's age. I do remember the Warners guys telling me the posted DVD packaging was a phony.

Dec 1 05 4:53 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm being heretical again, but ... I never got a heckuva lot out of EITHER of 'em. I mean, they're eye-filling and all, but to me THIS ISLAND EARTH isn't much more than FLASH GORDON in color. And, with the exception of Anne Francis and Robby, the cast (and deluxe running time) of FORBIDDEN PLANET is strictly from Snoozeville. I'll never forget bringing home a Films Inc. 'scope 16mm print and showing it to a roomful of people who were psyched for it, who had ASKED for it ... and who were all asleep within 30, 35 minutes. At least six people, if I'm remembering right. My eyelids were kinda heavy too. We never did run Reels 2 and 3.

Granted TIE isn't nearly as intellectually reaching (e.g., the "thermal barrier"), but it's big-budget and colorful. Super-duper SE DVDs of both of 'em would be terrific. You can keep yer Star Wars and Star Treks. But you really did hafta Be There to understand, I think....

Dec 1 05 10:06 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm sure they did knock the socks of kids in 1955-56, and there are parts of FORBIDDEN PLANET that impressed me very much at 12 and still today. There are just too many lulls, too many actors on the level of Jack Kelly, Warren Stevens, Earl Holliman, etc., snoozin' up the screen, etc. But don't get me started on THIS ISLAND EARTH, which could be fairly synopsized down to, "Two Earth scientists are brought to another planet where, arriving too late for the aliens' purposes, they get apologies and a courteous return trip home." Everything else is eye candy ... and, in 2005, not especially attractive eye candy any more (all those obvious paintings, phonily superimposed flash-powder explosions, etc.). Even as a kid, the spaceship with its cathedral ceilings and bare Grand Central Station-sized rooms struck me as kinda ridiculous.

Dec 2 05 9:54 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tom -- I agree with you on the short-comings of FP. It has never lived up to it reputation -- nor is it particularly interesting as SF, either. TIE, on the other hand, never had the vaunted reputation of FB, and, in its own small way, is much more satisfying. There are certainly fewer dead spots, and the whole thing has a zippy, pulpish feel that works well. (The film is infinitely superior than the novel upon which it's based.)

Plot-wise, there isn't a lot that would seem out-of-place in a Katzman serial, except the ending, where the aliens we've gotten to know LOSE the war, and Exeter rides his plummeting spaceship Slim Pickens-style right down into the drink. And all the cliffhangers are there -- Cal's jet nearly crashing, the saucer shooting at Cal and Ruth in their fleeing car, meteors in space, etc. "Will Cal and Ruth ever leave this benighted planet? What diabolical plans does The Monitor HAVE for them? Is Exeter to be trusted? You'll learn the thriller answers next week in MENACED BY THE METALUNA MUTANT, Chapter 11 of THIS ISLAND EARTH, here in this theater!" The only Metaluna authority figure we get to see is The Monitor, who's a real pr*ck. I wonder if the Metalunans were "the bad guys" in that interstellar war ... ?
