It's a fun B, with some cool zombies, hokey-but-fun underwater action, and of course, Allison Hayes. Hubba hubba. I think the movie would be better remembered if the zombies didn't look so, uh, healthy. A little rotting flesh makeup would've added a bunch to the creepiness factor. But as it stands, I got a real kick out of it. Strangenstein

Notice how much more populated the village seems at the end than at the beginning, and how many more locations appear.

Apr 7 12 10:46 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	A TCM article on THE GAMMA PEOPLE with some interesting info (including the script participation of Robert Aldrich): http://www.tcm.com/this-month/article/382629\|0/Underwater-Zombies-on-9-2-.html It played on TCM a night or two ago, and I recorded it, and just watched it now for the first time in MANY many moons -- and really enjoyed it. So "different" and entertaining for all the reasons posted in this thread over the last several years. The goons are actually scary IMHO; when gangs of them are turned loose, it's like the NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD Cemetery Ghoul .... times 12. Everywhere you read-up on GAMMA PEOPLE, it says it was shot in England, but it sure doesn't look like it to me. Many scenes have towering mountains in the background. Funny, too, that Albert Broccoli was involved (without screen credit) because the ending IS almost like a Bond finale, with the hero and the girl in a sci-fi-flavored death trap in the mad scientist's lab, within seconds of death, battling their way out, reinforcements arrive, a battle royale ensues, the whole place burns/blows up. I also liked the score a lot. I can't remember the last time I "re-acquainted" myself with a '50s sci-fi flick I haven't seen in decades, and enjoyed it this much. It's on TCM again in about two weeks.

(Well, not any more. I just decided to splurge and bought the one-cent copy, on the off-chance he writes about GAMMA PEOPLE.) Maybe a member of the CHFB's Englishter branch could seek him out for a GAMMA PEOPLE interview?? Apr 7 12 11:18 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Sniffing around the Internet and my own files, I see that (in addition to Brian Donlevy), other actors slated to appear in the movie (but didn't) included Patricia Medina and Trevor Howard. According to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, it was partly shot in Austria. THAT I can believe. Exteriors-wise, none of it makes me think "England."

Apr 8 12 10:14 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The exteriors of GAMMA PEOPLE were indeed shot in Austria (Imst/Tyrol), which makes the spelling mistakes of some signs - KOMMODANTUR instead of KOMMANDANTUR ("Command Station"), GERFÄHRLICH instead of GEFÄHRLICH ("Dangerous") and others - rather odd. For some reason, this movie appears to have become kind of a lifelong pet peeve for producer Albert Broccoli. In a 1959 interview, he went off on a tangent to bring it up and mention that he DIDN'T want to make it; I think I've stumbled across at least one other story or interview where he brought it up out of the blue to complain about it; AND ... I had a buddy who was friendly with Broccoli's family, and I asked my buddy to ask Broccoli if he'd talk to me about GAMMA PEOPLE. My buddy later reported back to me that he asked, and Broccoli stiffened up, the temperature in the room dropped about 20 degrees, and the unspoken message of "Don't ... say ... another ... word" hung heavy in the air. This was in the '90s.
