Sep 21 08 12:14 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Obviously the prevailing sentiment here is that Eddie Cahn's dry-for-wet zombie movie is much more beloved than John Gilling's weird politico-sci fi GAMMA PEOPLE, but I think the difference here is between a tossed-off routine studio program assignment and an off-kilter oddity with some wit and originality. Bottom line: I've seen and enjoyed GAMMA numerous times, but once was enough for ZOMBIES. Some movies contain mysteries that don't fully reveal themselves at first viewing and others are pretty much, what you see is all there is. I'm not making a case that GAMMA is any kind of classic, just that ZOMBIES is a lot dumber (not a bad thing), and I've liked GAMMA for a very long time. Is all.

Jan 16 11 3:26 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I converted a tape of THE GAMMA PEOPLE to DVD-R for a Monster Kid meeting and got mixed results. I think the movie has enough going for it to make it rewatchable. The uneven tone between humor and horror is a bit irksome but there are enough scenes of horror and suspense to make the film effectively creepy, even if it's somewhat dissipated by comic action. The goons -- the now mindless idiots who are under the control of the mad scientist Boronski -- are unsettling as is the scene with the girl at the piano. The film feels and looks a bit like a Quatermass picture. Interestingly, it was produced by Cubby Broccoli's Warwick productions. Unfortunately, one of our Monster Kid members, a guy who tends to MST3K whenever anything "old" and in black & white is presented, immediately went on a movie length riff, concentrating on Leslie Phillips' flailing arms and somewhat mincing running. He definitely brought the film down for the others whose opinion of the film was probably lower than if they'd seen it without the derisive remarks.

The acting is good (although there are moments where the usually reliable Paul Douglas seems awkward; his alcoholism and other health problems became especially evident in the movies made in his last remaining years), but the writing and direction seem stilted. John Gilling would definitely improve with his subsequent films. The biggest mistake is that we learn what the villains are up to way too early, before the heroes do, which kills any genuine aura of mystery the film may have. It's also disappointing that the film seemingly sideswipes the potential political commentary. The country they are in is clearly supposed to be East Germany (note the sarcastic comment made about it being a "Democratic Republic) and they could have developed on this by commenting on how dictatorships, regardless of their ideology, try to engineer their citizenry into perfection, but any such commentary is muted. Instead of having the reporters accidentally stumble into the village (a ludicrous turn of events), it would have been more effective if they entered it intentionally to report on the country's "superior" education system a la Walter Duranty, only to be confronted by the inhumane means by which such superiority is achieved.

Aug 24 11 4:50 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	allison hayes made this movie....first watched at my grandmother's house late at night with my hands slightly covering my eyes....lololol....but when i seen allison....wow...even as a kid you knew one thing....she was hot...gorgeous woman...but as always in these type's of movies we have a stupid writer letting the '' little girl '' next door get saved at the end and get the guy....allison would have been the one saved if i wrote it....never liked the little girl next door look....sorry...lololol....

I initially got the impression that the reporters' train car had been deliberately unhitched so that they'd end up in the obscure ruritanian country. It appeared as if the children at the switching post were waiting to detour the car for that purpose. None of this pans out as the village doesn't want them there so nix the conspiracy. I guess the kids were just being mischievous. However, I wouldn't think this was the first time they'd done that.
