Aug 16 05 11:17 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Well, GAMMA PEOPLE is definitely more "good" than ZOMBIES...in fact it's an endearingly weird "mythical country" fantasy of a sort that hasn't been made in nearly half a century. And ZOMBIES, tho pretty silly (with some of the worst fake "underwater" effects since DIVER DAN), is still fun if you're in the mood for 50s grade B nonsense.

Aug 17 05 7:38 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I saw a voodoo double-bill of BLACK MOON (1934) and ZOMBIES OF MORA TAU at the Film Forum where IMHO everybody seemed kinda pleasantly bored by the former -- not much reaction when it was over, "forced" comments along the lines of, "Well, I'm glad I finally saw it," etc. Then ZOMBIES came on, and the audience laughed in the right spots (and a few of the "wrong" ones), seemed IMHO kind-of "into" it, and there was applause at the end and happy faces and enthusiastic chitchat about it. I thought it played well up there on the (semi-) big screen.

Aug 18 05 5:27 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Yeah, BLACK MOON has wonderful atmosphere...and alas, not much else. Almost seems like a (very) dry run for the Lewtons. Since I invoked ZOMBIES in the LOST SKELETON trailer, I suggested the New Beverly in L.A. play them as a double bill last summer. They went together surprisingly well. Animala and Allison Hayes definitely have some common ancestors! Mike S. "Rowr."

Aug 19 05 12:30 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	There were two reasons I always felt a special kinship with Ron Borst, a man I know only through his writing. First, in his Photon article (issue #20) on "Zombies in the Cinema", he actually had nice things to say about ZOMBIES OF MORA TAU. At the time (and pretty much up to the present day), I thought I was the only one who felt any sort of appreciation for that flick. Secondly, in some Photon or other, he offered the opinion that Andy Milligan's TORTURE DUNGEON was the worst movie of all time. I've held to that belief through all the PLAN 9, ROBOT MONSTER, and MANOS hysteria. By the by, I should thank the good ole CHFB for forcing me to drag my Photon collection off the top shelf (where it shares a box with the complete run of MAD MONSTERS). Guess I know what'll keep me up too late tonight.

For what it's worth, I'd select ZOMBIES OF MORA TAU, just because it's faster moving, has underwater zombies, Allison Hayes, and a great scene with lots of candles. You get to see the same zombie who's in the opening scene of CREATURE WITH THE ATOM BRAIN, too---former wrestler Karl "Killer" Davis. Wouldn't a monster tag team of Karl and Tor have been great? GAMMA PEOPLE is an odd mix of not very funny Ruritanian comedy and very mild dystopian science fiction, although it features a mad scientist, a very annoying juvenile genius, an interesting SF gadget, and a giant papiere-mache face, if memory serves.

One of the things I've always liked about Michael Weldon's reviews is how directly he gets to the point, and how he does it with humor. I understand that he's putting an end to the PSYCHOTRONIC, unfortunately. R.I.P. I forgot to mention GAMMA PEOPLE's other virtue, the presence of Paul Douglas, an actor and former sportswriter who gave many enjoyable performances in forties and fifties film. The only other genre film credits for him I can think of are fantasies, ANGELS IN THE OUTFIELD, IT HAPPENS EVERY SPRING and, marginally, JOE MACBETH. His best performance is probably in FOURTEEN HOURS, in which he plays a kindly cop who tries to talk a distraught Richard Basehart out of jumping off the high ledge of a midtown hotel.

I just meant that your description of GAMMA PEOPLE could easily have been the sort of capsule description Weldon might have written. To my mind, it's in synch with the way he'd write many of his capsule summaries.

Jul 19 06 11:34 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Two little points o'semi-interest, Paul Douglas apparently took the GAMMA PEOPLE assignment as an OK excuse to go along to England with his wife Jan Sterling, who was doing 1984 (at least I've read that somewhere... I don't know the respective production dates.) Not that casting Yanks Jan Sterling and Edmund O'Brien in the veddy-English Orwell story was that great an idea... ZOMBIES OF MORA TAU was written by Bernie Gordon under his usual blacklist pseudonym Raymond T. Marcus (who was a car salesman friend of his out in the Valley.) When Bernie saw the rushes of the zombies rising so awkwardly from their coffins, he suggested the director do shoot it againto make it eerie instead of dumb. The director (wasn't it the classy and artitistic Eddie Cahn?) replied, "I got six days to make this piece of shhht. You think I got time for retakes?"

I can't find my copy of the original PSYCHOTRONIC, and I really would like to know how much of what I said was in Michael Weldon's review. So, if you have a copy handy, could you take a look and compare? A mind is a terrible thing to waste, but hey, whaddaya gonna do? I love this stuff.

They apparenty had some kind of bubble making machines attached to the zombie stunt men for those shots, too. There's one other underwater zombie that I can think of, in Lucio Fulci's ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS, or whatever it's called, but that was more than tweny years later. The zombie in that film has a fight with a shark, though. Even Edward L. Cahn couldn't top that.

The phrase "Twilight Zone" was used in that intro. Didn't know how many people picked up on that, especially since this was 2 years before Rod Serling brought TZ to tv. -For anyone who cares, though on this board, I'm probably the last person to discover that little factoid.
