I don't like, but can kinda-sorta see the rationale behind "toy" movies like TRANSFORMERS. At least there are 'characters' of a sort to work with. But trying to turn basically, story-less objects into franchises based on name recognition? I now uneagerly anticipate "doorknob", "bar of soap" and "Mr. Coffee" multimillion dollar movies.

Yeah, probably what they're going for. But, these kind of stories have been done before -- THEY LIVE, 13 GHOSTS, etc. They didn't call them "View-Master" out of sheer crass (and moronic) marketing. Maybe a new THE NEXT VOICE YOU HEAR, called "iPOD", another trip to the Willy Wonka well with HERSHEY BAR, or a remake of THEM called "RAID 7OZ AEROSOL CAN"? Maybe they'll make a good movie if this actually is produced ... I'd be happy to be wrong, but if I were a betting man, I'd say given the industry track record for such creatively-bereft starting blocks, it's going to be a stinker. And a turd in 3-D is still a turd!

A smaller, much weaker End of the Line uses pagers to signal religious mass murder. They sold it to another, and that one sold it to yet another. It finally ended up in the hands of Fisher-Price. Over this period, they gradually ceased production of the scenic-wonders discs that had been the mainstay of View-Master when it was owned by Sawyer's, and headed off into exclusively children's stuff. Last December, Fisher-Price seems to have both announced they were going to stop making View-Master reels, and that they would only do ones based on animated movies.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but what vexes me is that someone actually is presumably licensing and paying money to "adapt" an object that has, in itself, no literary qualities whatsoever. Even the CHFB has its characters (plenty of 'em), storylines, conflict, etc. I think it's fair game, if maybe not a box office biggie! The more apt analogy to the View-master here would be "Yuku web platform: the movie". It's also different than what Reed mentions above ... sure, cell phones, products of all kinds have been used as plot elements in movies. But, they didn't "adapt" the NOKIA 9700 or whatever.

There's a restaurant I used to go to under the parking garage in Burbank by the movie theaters, Virgin Records, Ikea, that had their dessert menu on View Master reels.

I mean, sure, okay, it started as a toy, but is that why it got made? Were legions of fans screaming bloody murder for the director to get Peter Cullen to voice Optimus Prime in the first movie or Frank Welker to voice Soundwave in the second movie because it was based on a toy? You'll have to forgive my ignorance but I don't seem to remember either Mr. Cullen or Mr. Welker having any association with the toylines. Did the producers contact british comic book author Simon Furman as an early consultant for the first movie because it was based on a toy? If they wanted comic writers why not get Dennis O'Niel and Gerry Conway on board. Both of them were comic book writers and both of them were hired to create the back story for the toylines when Hasbro brought them over from Japan. Heck, Dennis O'Niel was the guy who gave Optimus Prime his name! Why contact a guy who wrote a British comic book about the Transformers and then pay special attention to a cartoon about toys, if the toys were the main source material? Because Transformers is more than what it was. The cartoon started it and the comics by Simon Furman (the only Transformers comics as far as I'm concerned) are what most fans care about. Now, it is a given, that the cartoon is better remembered and clearly the cartoon had a deeper impact on the movie than the comic, but even the comic had a deeper impact than the toyline itself. Transformers got made because it was based on a cartoon that people know and love today. I meet people all the time, adults, children, what have you, who know and love the Transformers and it's not because of Armada or Transformers Animated or any of the other crap that followed. Transformers might have started out as a toyline, but recognition needs to go where it's deserved. Transformers was a cartoon movie. It owes more to the cartoon that it did the toyline. Anyone who can't see that is either blind or too stubborn to admit it. End of rabid fan rant!

An open letter to Johnny Depp: Dear Johnny Depp, Has it really come to this? An article in Tuesday's Hollywood Reporter talked about the fact that, while you've got Public Enemies in theaters and Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland in the can (along with The Rum Diaries and The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus), none of your other prospective projects was coming together. Then it started listing them -- and the first title on the list was a remake of The Incredible Mr. Limpet, a 1964 movie in which Don Knotts played a man who was transformed into a talking fish. And a new Lone Ranger film -- in which you would play Tonto. And a remake of the vampire soap opera Dark Shadows. And Pirates of the Caribbean 4. I recognize that Hollywood ran out of original ideas years ago -- and that it's suffering some sort of massive brain bleed this summer with Transformers 2 and Land of the Lost. But I always assumed that you, Johnny Depp, had a little more integrity -- and taste -- than this. OK, Pirates 4 makes a certain financial sense, even though the series ran out of steam after the first one. An eight-figure paycheck -- and infinite residuals -- are hard to pass up. But The Incredible Mr. Limpet? This was a movie that stank on ice when it was fresh. Is this what you now aspire to? Remaking the Don Knotts oeuvre? What's next: teaming up with, oh, I don't know, Nicolas Cage to remake The Apple Dumpling Gang? Zoiks! I could see Depp as Tonto, but Mr. Limpet??? It's time to go indie again, especially if Pirates 4 is around the corner. Consider the true cost of living with Clown Phobia.
