The Tootsie Pop commercial with Mr. Owl ("How many licks..." went for several years, maybe a decade or more; and that old Ginsu knife commercial, if I recall correctly, could still be seen here and there in the early 80's. In the mid to late 80's when I started I only had 7 channels. Two PBS stations, ABC, NBC, CBS and two UHF stations. PBS occasionally showed the silents, I caught POTO and Nosferatu there as kids. And WLVI showed horror movies every now and then. We'd usually get the later Vincent Price stuff, the Amicus anthologies, pretty much any non Hammer horror color movies made from around 68-82. And the 43 POTO. Then after about 89 things dried up and other than the early Stephen King adaptions we got nothing. Getting cable in 93 was a blast. The sci fi channel showed most of the classic Universals, some Hammers and AMC showed tons too. Also Joe Bob Briggs showed a lot of the mid 70's to late 80's horror. Now there's just TCM, which mostly sticks to the Lewtons and sci-fi classics except in October. But as a channel, certainly there's more on TCM month for month than anything from my childhood (But that only goes back to about 84) Oddly enough Boston took a while as an area to get horror. I don't believe Shock Theater played here in 58 and horror movies never play long at my local theater (the manager, a friend, says that's always been the case since he bought the place in 78)

I don't remember the older man from the original commercials being in the commercial though, perhaps he'd passed away by that time. Another guy that come to mind, as far as long running commercials, was the APEX guy. But remember, "now I can't call you, you have to call us..."

Seems in the 80's that "TV/VCR repair" was the wave of the future,now VCRs are almost extinct and a TV repairman from that era would look at a flat screen TV in total disbelief. My favorite old commercial pitchman was,hands down,Tom Carvel. How could you not be totally charmed by a guy completely ill suited to doing voiceovers yet pulling it off for years. He always sounded like he had a mouthful of egg whites in the recording sessions. View and enjoy his golden throated goodness. Carvel ice cream cake
