Jun 29 09 4:44 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Another thread on 'Turner Classic Movies' wound up starting a discussion about whether or not there are/were more vintage horror/sci-fi movies routinely broadcast in Modern Times, or in the Past? I think it largely hinges on what era you grew up in, and WHERE. As s Monster Kid who grew up in the late '60s and early '70s in the New York area, there seemed to be no end of regular, routine, daily TV broadcasts of many horror/sci-fi films from the '30s to the '50s... they'd be on at all times of the day, morning -- afternoon -- night -- late night. Some people here have felt that the programming is better in the Modern Era (say '90s - '00s) than in the '60s - '70s. What have been your experiences? Last Edited By: Joe Karlosi Jun 30 09 2:29 PM. So here are his postings that I am borrowing off AV MANIACS (and bear in mind - this is programming for ONE DAY!): OK, from the Saturday, May 22, 1971 Guide comes the following: 12PM Channel 5. "The Boogie Men Will Get You" (1942) A string of corpses are kept in the wine cellar of a colonial inn which houses a demented professor who is trying to create a "superman". Boris Karloff. (90 min.) BTW, the above movie is listed in the Guide as a "Melodrama". 8:30PM Channel 5. "The Black Sleep" (1956) A mad scientist forces a doctor to assist in some strange experiments. Basil Rathbone, Akim Tamiroff, Lon Chaney, John Carradine, Bela Lugosi, Herbert Rudley, Patricia Blake, Tor Johnson. (90 min.) Another "Melodrama". 8:30PM Channel 11. "Gorgo" (C) (English; 1961) It might not have been a good idea to bring that live prehistoric monster to London - it has a parent that's coming after it. Bill Travers, William Sylvester, Vincent Winter. (90 min. ) More "Melodrama". 9:30PM Channel 7. "Konga" (C) (English; 1960) A scientist conducts experiments to increase the size and strength of a chimpanzee. Michael Gough, Margo Johns, Jess Conrad, Claire Gordon, Austin Trevor, Jack Watson. (90 min. ) Still more "Melodrama". 11PM Channel 5. "The Bride Of Frankenstein" (1935) James Whale's exciting sequel to the 1931 classic features top-notch acting, photography, sets and direction. Boris Karloff, Colin Clive. (90 min. ) This one listed as a "Thriller". 11PM Channel 9. DOUBLE FEATURE (2hrs., 30 min. ) 1 - "Dead Man's Eyes" (1944) A blind artist is accused of murdering his benefactor for the man's eyes, which he knows have been willed to him. Lon Chaney Jr., Jean Parker, Paul Kelly. 2 - "Calling Dr. Death" (1943) A prominent neurologist 's malicious wife plots to destroy their marriage. Lon Chaney Jr., Ramsay Ames. Both films listed as "Melodrama". *11:30PM Channel 11 - "The Crawling Eye" (English; 1958) In a radioactive cloud lies a tentacled monster, awaiting it's victims. Forrest Tucker, Laurence Payne, Jennifer Jayne. (90 min. ) And still more "Melodrama". This is a pretty good example of why we as kids back in the day looked forward to Saturday's so much Note the mostly 90 minute time slots and also note that back in '71, the TV Guide did not denote programs that were in black and white like they would eventually do with a (BW). Instead, they make no notation alongside black and white programs but instead, signified those that were in color. Thus the (C) in some of the movie information.

On more than one Saturday night I'd get to select from even more monster kid treasures.

I grew up on LI in the 60s and 70s and yeah, Saturdays were GOLD if you were a monster kid. By the 70s a lot of the Universal oldies shifted over from Channel 5 (WNEW) to Channel 9 (WOW) and they started airing them on weekday afternoons! Cromwell

I used to go to the local library every week and go through the weekly TV listings in the Sunday NY Times. Just masochistic, I guess. Occasionally I'd even make lists of the horror films New Yorkers were able to see. It was painful, but somehow hopeful as well. After all, if New York showed all these movies ("DEATH RAY OF DR. MABUSE ?? are you kiddin' me?!") maybe someday I'd get to see 'em too. And, eventually, I did. As far as TV Guide goes...my weekly search through those pages was a fingers-crossed highlight of my week. I'd mark everything that was--or might be--horror, s-f, or fantasy-related. There were never a lot. The worst--and I recall it all too well--was the week that only ONE genre film turned up anywhere in the mag. It was BACK FROM THE DEAD and it showed on a station that we couldn't pick up. It was so traumatic that I can still remember which TV Guide it was. I don't know the date, but the cover was a close-up of Cara Williams from "Pete and Gladys." She was a lovely woman, but I hated the sight of her from then on.

Mostly thanks to Channel 9 (but just about all the other stations were also "in there pitching"), there were dozens of horror/sci-fi oldies on TV every week of my young life. I felt sorry for Monster Kids in other parts of the country because regularly I'd read in monster mags and fanzines that monster movies that were on NY TV every couple of months for my entire life were "possibly lost films" and "never on television." (In those days, a writer would have to be a real knucklehead to write that. Just because a movie was in a TV package that hadn't been bought by any of the four or five stations in their neck of the woods, they'd assume it wasn't running ANYwhere. Quite a leap!)

IT was WTNH Channel 8 from New Haven CT, and it drove me BONKERS in that I could often pick up the SOUND but no picture! Therefore I first LISTENED to the opening 15 minutes of BRIDE and SON OF FRANKENSTEIN in the mid-60s before I caught them on Ch. 4's FESTIVAL OF THRILLERS (1966, Sat night 1am into Sunday morning, then in 1967 stupidly moved to Sunday night 1am -- a school night -- which of course killed it off). For years I even had an audio tape I made of NIGHT OF TERROR of "The Big Picture", as Channel 8 called their Saturday movie, using Leroy Anderson's "Sandpaper Ballet" as signature music (to this day I can't hear "Sandpaper" without thinking of the Main Title to NIGHT OF TERROR) In 1965-66, Channel 3 out of Hartford CT picked up the U-I 50s package a good 3 -6 months before WCBS-2 in NYC, and so we went CRAZY seeing things THE CREATURE, IT CAME FROM O.S, DEADLY MANTIS, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA listed in our NY-Metro TV Guide playing on this station we could not get (and being a fringe station, it was indicated by a black numeral in a WHITE TV box in our guide!) and which would not play for weeks or MONTHS on NY TV. I actually made my family drive me to my grandparents to see PHANTOM! It didn't hit NY TV until a good 6 months later. <<

We had the Real Heaven on Earth back in the early/middle 60s. We lived in Northeast Jersey which meant we had easy access to the New York stations including Channel 9. But in the summertime we headed for the Jersey shore every weekend which meant we were able to pick up the Philadelphia stations in addition to the NYC line-up. Channel 6's Double Chiller Theater was God's gift to Monster Kids, two monster flicks in a row! The entire Shock package, all the American Internationals of the 50s and early 60s (except for the Poe films), all the RKOs of the 30s/40s (including the Kongs), a few stray Warner Brothers horrors of the 30s, a nice helping of the 50s Allied Artists and Columbias horror films. It was totally unreal. And they didn't skip a frame of the movie unlike New York's Channel 9 butchers.And when Double Chiller signed off after midnight, the fun would continue with Hollywood's Finest. Which invariably showed yet another vintage horror movie. Truly mind boggling.

Indiana - ... would get one - or two, if lucky! - Late Night monster films a weekend, from Toledo or Ft. Wayne... ... for a year - or two, if very lucky! - untill the format changed... ... and - if VERY lucky! - a '50's Giant Bug film on the 4:30 movie, once a week or so ... ... and - if DELIRIOUSLY lucky! - and the atmosphere was bounclng rarely, and you went outside and twisted the antenna just right - THE GHOUL, from Detroit! Good on youse guys on The Coasts - but please to remember, the vast majority of the country is Flyover Land! -Craig

Joe, as a MONSTER KID growing up in the 60s I would have to say that you would have to include the early and mid 60s as well. CHILLER THEATRE made it's debut on WPIX in the early 60s and was hosted by none other then ZACHERLY. WWOR had SUPERNATURAL THEATRE as well as monster/horror themes on the MILLION DOLLAR movie. I don't recall any weekly monster show on WNEW, but there were a host of movie programs that I'm sure featured horror/sci fi films. And then there were the LATE SHOWS on CBS, NBC, and ABC. Basically, what I'm tring to say is that the seeds for the late 60s early 70s Monster movie craze on NYC Television were planted in the early to mid 60s.

Jun 30 09 8:11 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The first time I picked up a Philadelphia channel that I shouldn't have been able to pick up, it was the middle of the night and they were showing IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA, which I'd never seen full-length before -- there were about ten minutes that were new to me. So of course I then began staying up late for the sole purpose of waiting for the NYC channels to sign off so that the Philly station would show up. And from then on, I got nuthin' but movies like THE POWER AND THE PRIZE with Robert Taylor and a lot of other mind-numbing MGM 1950s bores.

I was always a fan of those short,out of patience synopsis that double as reviews some local newspapers TV listings would throw at you. Something along the lines of "Giant grasshoppers attack Chicago.Don't bother".

Basically, what I'm tring to say is that the seeds for the late 60s early 70s Monster movie craze on NYC Television were planted in the early to mid 60s. Oh, definitely! But the only reason I didn't include the early to mid '60s in my summary was because I was born in 1962, and for me, I couldn't speak from first-hand knowledge there (I didn't start seeing TV monster movies until 1968 or 1969, I'd estimate). But one thing I am learning here with this thread is that it could very well be that those of us living in the NY/NJ area may have been specially priviliged. Maybe that's why some other older Monster Kids did not see it the same way, and why they actually feel that there were more treasures from the Modern Cable Era.

Born in '52, so I get to include the early and middle part of the decade (plus the "Monster Cycle" that played at the drive-ins during the mid to late '50s). Have to admit, growing up in the tri-state area back then must have spoiled me. I'd be happy if just one of the cable companies (are you listening, TCM?) would have a Creature Feature/Chiller Theater/Fright Night/Chillers From Science Fiction etc. etc. night. BTW - if the TV Guide synopsis for a flick started with "lurid" you just had to see it.

And it's part of the reason why I've always had a "pfffft!" attitude toward the "If there hadn't been an FM, kids wouldn't have been introduced to these movies and there'd BE no fandom today" mindset. All you had to do back then to be introduced to this stuff was turn on the TV at just about any hour of the day or night. Turn the dial a click or two and you'd be introduced to it again. Every day in school, there'd be a lot of talk about the stuff that had been on the afternoon and night before (the movies, TWILIGHT ZONE and OUTER LIMITS reruns, on and on). I don't know if FM was ever mentioned once; I think I was the only one who looked at it (up to around age 13 or 14, anyway).
