Hall Of Fame or Monster Kid Of The Year? | ||
|
I think perhaps a Monster Kid Hall Of Fame award is more appropriate? Monster Kid Of The Year usually is for someone who did something specific that year to
further the world of fandom. Just a thought. I'd be happy either way.

That's truly the best way to recognize him. |

And just when I thought I was done nominating...
I must nominate Kevin Clement for the Monster Kid Hall Of Fame. Kevin created the Chiller Theatre Convention, the grandaddy of all genre cons two decades ago, and continues to run it to this day. His love for monster movies has guided his life, so much so that his his daughter is named Sara Jane, after our friend Sara Karloff. His band, The Dead Elvi, produce songs that reflect the passion we all have for classic horror, with titles like "The Creature Stole My Surfboard" and "John Agar Rules." His conventions have made so many genre celebrities available to fans, and the Saturday night concerts have brought together an amazing array of talent. Below is a poster created several years ago by our own George Chastain. A nod to the Beatles, it features many of the guests that Kevin has hosted at Chiller through the years. I am proud to one of the guests in the crowd. Kevin Clement, or as I like to call him, "Don Clementeone," The Godfather.

I whole-heartedly second that nomination, Frank! I've only been able to attend a few of Kevin's many Chillers, but I had a fabulous time at all of them
and found Kevin to be a wonderful guy as well as a great show organizer and a true-blue Monster Kid and a real square shooter.
It was a great pleasure to design that poster for Kevin and the Dead Elvi (and John Zacherle), and I've never felt more appreciated (nor been so well remunerated) for doing a job like that. When I started working on the image, Kevin gave me a SELECTED list of special guests from previous shows to include in it; at the eleventh hour we added all the guests scheduled to appear at the 13th anniversary show. Of course there have been many more Chiller guests since then. Add to that the many guests who've attended multiple shows, and the celebrities who've just shown up unannounced as fans or out of curiosity, and you'll get an idea of the HUGE list of guests Kevin has managed to present at Chiller over the many years he's run the show. Frank is in the top row, third from the left. And I'm thankful that the late greats Michael R. Thomas, Ben Chapman, Forry Ackerman and Sammy Petrillo are included in the tribute, along with many other wonderful people who are no longer with us. To take a closer look at all the guests, check it out a bit bigger on the link below, and then click that image to see a really big blowup that shows all the details clearly: http://myweb.wvnet.edu/e-...io/posters/deadelvi.html

I haven't been on here in a while, so I just read the news about Mike "Ygor" Thomas - Hall of Fame is the perfect Rondo Award for Mike, and
it's too bad he didn't get one before he passed away. I was really shocked to see he'd passed away - I know he just played Dracula in the House
movie. He was such a talented guy, and his Lugosi's, especially Ygor, were spot-on. Monster Bash will NOT be the same without him.
I'd second Kevin Clement as well. Great guy, and his band rocks. And Morgus for Hall of Fame is a MUST - this is his 50th anniversary, as I wrote before. 50 YEARS of horror hosting! With Zacherley, Vampira, Ghoulardi, and Bob Wilkins having won Rondo Hall of Fame's already, there is NO other host more deserving. He is still alive and well and active and hopefully would be able to come receive his award in person. That would be pretty darn cool. |

It may be a bit early, and there's one more G-FAN set to come out this year, but the cover to G-FAN #89 definitely deserves a Rondo
Nomination:

I'd like to nominate two articles for Rondo Awards:
- totorom's interview with Akira Takarada ("Godzilla, My Old Friend: Akira Takarada Talks about His Career, His Co-Stars ... and His Famous 'Classmate'") in G-FAN #87 - Kenju Shimomura's article "Japan Under Star Wars Fever" in G-FAN #89 |

I'll fourth it just so the next guy gets
a "fifth" (Jim Beam, Jack, whatever)

I'd like to nominate Night Of The Creeps for best dvd release of 2009. With that lead in I think this would be a good year to consider Fred Dekker for the
Hall Of Fame.
While Fred Dekker has only made a handful of films two of them stand out as very Monster Kid movies. The Monster Squad uses some of our favorite classic monsters in a new light while retaining a very classic feel. Night Of The Creeps while very much a product of the 1980s pays homage to classic sci-fi of the 1950s including a black & white opening that is right off of the drive-in screen. It is my belief that if the Rondo Awards had been in existence during the initial release of these films they would have taken prizes. Dekker also has worked on Tales From The Crypt, and Star Trek Enterprise, both of which are based on franchises that are adored by monster kids. Outside of the actual film making, it seems Dekker has become very accessible to fans of those films doing appearances in support of revival screenings and leading the charge to give them a new home on dvd. Its my belief that he has the same love of monsters and horror that many of us share. While the 1980s were dominated by Freddy, Jason, and Michael Meyers Fred Dekker was reaching back to the classics that scared him as a child. I know many of you would agree with me, as The Monster Squad very nearly won a Rondo a few years back. I hope when voiting time comes, you remember Dekker in your picks for Monster Kid Hall Of Fame. |

This is a Frankenstein he made.I strongly believe that Mike deserves "Artist Of The Year" for this remarkable piece of art. It is jaw-dropping in it's execution, right down to the tiny little hairs on the inside of the ears. That's how detailed it is. This sculpture represents the kind of dedication and reverance to classic horror fandom that the Rondo's were meant to celebrate. With vast respect to the dozens and dozens of other super-talented artists who have produced award-worthy artwork in 2009, Mike Hill is getting my vote this year. Frank Dietz

I think it's too bad sculpture and 2-D work go head to head. Maybe it isn't practical to separate them (esp. now that Universal goes after tiny run
garage kit and sculpts of the Universal monsters will be rare as hen's teeth), but I hate to hafta choose between sculptors and painters.

I'm with you guys on Bob Burns all the way. In fact lets just call it the "Bob Burns Monster Kid Award".
That sculpture defies my ability to convey how amazing it really is. Can you imagine having that guy sitting in your home, chair and all. Your visitors would really get a "Boris sent you", right through the ceiling. |
