VCI paid millions to Industrial Light and Magic to place CGI flaws to enhance the video's performance to the home viewers. I'm sure that Bill Warren and Tom Weaver would back me up on this.

Can any other owners chime in on the topic (I've actually held onto my VHS from the same company just because the lines on the DVD are so distracting). Thanks folks!

Sep 13 06 1:16 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The VCI disc does seem to have a interlace problem that becomes particularly annoying in the more active scenes. I believe this was a result of a PAL > NTSC conversion problem. You could e-mail VCI to see if this has ever been fixed and would they issue a replacement. To my knowledge it has not been fixed.

Sep 25 06 1:14 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	When I purchased the HOTBM DVD, I first played it on the old DVD player I'd had since 1998 and experienced the "streaking" lines as mentioned. Went out & bought a brand-new Pioneer and had no problems at all. Guess the old machines can't handle the PAL-to_NTSC transfers. Solution: new machine. They sure cost a lot less now than that hunk o' junk that won't play the MUSEUM disc!

In the scene where Bancroft kills the old antiquarian (Beatrice Varley) with the ice tongs, the murder itself takes place off camera, we only see Michael Gough on the screen. A famous publicity still presents a more explicit version of the murder, with the tongs around the neck of the old woman. Some years ago, in a British fanzine (I forgot its title), a reviewer told that the movie was, unexpectedly, shown at the old Scala theater in London, during an evening devoted to horror movies, in a much explicit version. In brief, the end of the antiquarian's murder sequence was exactly like in the publicity still. I saw this movie when it was originally released in Paris almost fifty years ago, and saw it countless times since not only in theaters but on VHS, DVD, TV, etc. Never saw the "alternate" sequence. The French DVD, mentioned earlier, is the common version. Of course the entire story could be a hoax, but in the past we have had a lot of different versions of British horror movies (The Flesh and the Fiends, Jack the Ripper, Corridors of Blood, The Witchfinder General, Blood of the Vampire, The Curse of Frankenstein, Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed, Corruption, etc.). So anything is possible...

It was one late night in 1968, on the same night the CBC broadcast PSYCHO with the color shower sequence. I met a guy once who knew a Canadian, and he said a friend of his watched them both. :)

Jul 17 07 1:16 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Although I can't certify the authenticity of the anecdote ("Horrors of the Black Museum" shown in an alternate print at the Scala), all the other British movies I mentioned exists (or existed) in different versions, plus some others I forgot to mention like "The Stranglers of Bombay". I have seen all these versions, and this is the main reason for my question about "HotBM"... just a question. Among many other examples, from its original release to almost ten years later, "Circus of Horrors" was shown in France without the "knife in girl's throat" shot. As this was in the set of front-of-house stills, we were almost sure it was only a publicity shot. Then, the movie was re-released, and this shot WAS included in the new print. Outside of British films, I could mention dozens of other examples. Some years ago, the same day, in Paris, in two movie theaters in the same quarter (Pigalle, and Place Clichy), two totally different versions of "Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals" were shown. One being the "soft" version (with more flesh and less blood), the other the "hard" version (hardgore, I mean - with less sex). I was incredule so a friend forced me to watch the two prints one after the other, in offering to pay the seats !!! So, the idea of a similar thing for "HotBM" is a possibility. And only that !

I was surprised to see CIRCUS OF HORRORS on video sans the throat-knife close-up, which I remembered vividly from seeing it as a kid. It's in the trailer, though obscured by splash titles. Now, I'm NOT sure in retrospect that I really, truly remember the shot in question. I "remember" the scene, I remember the imagery-- but how much of that could have been suggestion (because the action is apparent even without the close-up shot) and how much could be after the fact fill-in-the-blanks, I don't know. "Look for a Star" still creeps me out, though.
