Bruce Humberstone Featuring Gordon Scott, Robert Beatty, Yolande Donlan Country: UK Tarzan rescues the passengers of a private plane that crashes in the jungle. They team up with an adventurer who agrees to lead them out of the jungle. However, the adventurer is in cahoots with a tribe of natives who wants to sacrifice the passengers to their god... Gordon Scott is likeable in the role, the color is nice, and there is lots of animal footage. Still, at heart, what we have here is a Double-Stuffed Safari-O with a third-rate plot whose predictability is incredibly apparent; there are no surprises and a lot of padding in this movie. Scott would appear six times as Tarzan before turning to sword and sandal movies. The fantastic content here is no more than the slight fantasy touches to any story about Tarzan. ***************** We'll get the fire department! They've got hoses. They'll spray anything.

Isn't this the first Tarzan without Jane, Cheetah, or Boy? Do you think perhaps the story is a little more adult than previous Tarzans? Did you see it in its original CinemaScope or in pan & scan fullscreen? Isn't Betta St. John in this one, the first of her two Tarzan films? I like Betta St. John ... I enjoy all of Scott's outings, even Tarzan and the Trappers and Tarzan's Fight For Life. I particularly enjoy the color in the latter, plus it gives a good role to Woody Strode. These films are essentially 1930s / 1940s backlot jungle movies with the benefit of improved 1950s tech. I accept them on that basis. Tarzan and the Lost Safari combines studio and some backlot with good location work and nice mattes. It's the first pictorial Tarzan with an eye for composition and setpieces. Tarzan's Greatest Adventure and Tarzan the Magnificent are outdoor adventures shot on location and have all the vitality of run-and-gun shoots. The producers should have kept Gordon Scott on the payroll longer. His films were getting better, his performances were getting stronger, and then they hired that skinny guy. Richard That's a lot of questions. About the only one I can answer without research is the format I saw it in. My copy is from an tape I made of its showing on AMC back when they didn't have commercials. I'm pretty sure it was in pan & scan. ***************** We'll get the fire department! They've got hoses. (06/25/09 11:20 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	I like the way some of these Gordon Scott Tarzans integrate domestic shot stuff with footage shot in Africa with a stuntman and animals and natives in their habitat. It works better than the "Look over there!" stock footage approach and was relatively seamless most of the time. I doubt the average kid in 1957 would have doubted for a second that this was all happening outside in Africa. (06/29/09 11:54 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	I recognize some stock footage in the best of Scott's entries, Tarzan's Greatest Adventure (1959). The stock footage is near the beginning where Tarzan washes in the river and plays some with animals on the shore. The cutaways are on a different film stock and a different terrain that doesn't quite match. Later, when the plane is going down, and when Tarzan and the girl are in a tree watching a lion stalk an animal, that's stock footage. But it's real footage in Africa so no complaints from me. I checked my two recordings of Tarzan and the Lost Safari. During the festival AMC did not air this title in CinemaScope, unfortunately. Only the Jock Mahoney and Mike Henry films aired letterboxed. I know it aired on Cinemax sometime later but I didn't see it. So far as I know only one of Scott's films has been shown in widescreen, Tarzan's Greatest Adventure, by the American Cinematheque in West L.A. but it wasn't CinemaScope. (06/30/09 12:58 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	I've noticed that some of the Scott Tarzans are structure like Allan "Rocky" Lane Westerns. The stories really aren't about Tarzan. They're about someone else. Tarzan then comes in -- like U.S. Marshal Lane riding into town -- and helps whoever the story is about get through the paces. But MAGNIFICENT and GREATEST ADVENTURE are really good.

I have them both on video taped off of amc, letterboxed, but I would really like dvds.

I stayed up all weekend about 15 years ago waiting for them to be repeated in widescreen. Damn, I guess I missed it. On my tapes only the opening titles are letterboxed, then it goes back to full-screen. Watched Tarzan's Greatest Adventure last night. The sound effects are really annoying, with plenty of sudden loud and jarring noises. Sounds like library sounds for an American western. A rifle shot indoors has an echo from far away, etc. Sometimes the music is over-wrought. But it's a great film and one of the few instances in which a "modern" Tarzan is believable.
