(06/20/09 11:58 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	I'm new to books on horror/scifi.In my old age, thought I may try it.It was a wild guess in the books I picked on Amazon.Just bought these, 1-Universal Horrors: The Studio's Classic Films, 1931-1946(Tom Weaver) 2-Poverty Row Horrors!: Monogram, Prc and Republic Horror Films of the Forties (Tom Weaver) (actually cant wait to get this one) 3-Hollywood Horror: From Gothic To Cosmic(Mark Vieira) 4-American Gothic: Sixty Years of Horror Cinema (John Rigby) Are there any others from the 20'-40's that are good? And can anyone recommend good books on 1950's Scifi?

SILENT SCREAMS (Haberman) and HORROR IN SILENT FILMS (Kinnard) are good ones for the 20s. Bill Warren's KEEP WATCHING THE SKIES! is easily the best for 50s sci fi. THE HORROR SPOOFS of ABBOTT AND COSTELLO is good, and I also like CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT by Rasmussen- a great insight on archetypical characters from the 30s and 40s (monsters, mad scientists, assistants, wise elders, heroes). The books you picked up already are great. Just sticking with 50s and earlier?

Thanks for the other titles.Will buy 'Keep Watching the Skies' right now.And, will look into those other titles. I would think there is nothing like an encyclopedia for these?

(06/20/09 3:51 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	HOLLYWOOD CAULDRON by Greg Mank KARLOFF AND LUGOSI--recently updated and changed to LUGOSI AND KARLOFF--also by Greg Mank HOLLYWOOD GOTHIC and THE MONSTER SHOW by David Skal I agree with lencandraw that Bill's KEEP WATCHING THE SKIES! is excellent, absolutely essential for the book shelf of any fan of 1950's sci-fi. However, you might want to wait until the new, updated edition comes out next year.

(06/26/09 10:44 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	For 1920-1940 horror I suggest Silver Scream http://www.amazon.com/Silver-Scream-Classic-Horror-Movies/dp/1845830261 A perfect book for you as it covers the genre you are asking about. Golden Horrors by Bryan Senn is another great one as previously noted. I also recommend the 2 volume set hardback1st edition of Keep Watching the Skies! There is 1 volume soft cover reprint but you are missing some fun line drawings on the covers. A revised edition is in the works too! I like Sci-Fi Gold by Dennis Saleh published in 1979. It covers most of the major 1950's films. Twenty All Time Great Sci-Fi Films is another gem. Nice cover of Gort in this hardback edition . This was published in 1982 by Arlington House. An often over looked one is Variety's Complete Science Fiction Reviews by Donald Willis is an interesting volume that mainly reproduces science fiction movie critic reviews when they were originally released.
