This has got to be one of the worst films I have ever seen. Enjoyed it if for no other reason than it is better than Jerry Spinger or Opra, but PHEW...what a stinker!
Everyone has to see this just once!

Who would have known...a tree stump with a face is actually the reincarnation of a tribal cheif.

One of the few scary movies I actually laughed at when I was a widdle kid.

Unbelievable then...unbelievable now.
And yet...and yet... In a way, the tree from Hell bridges the gap (or glen), between the apple-throwing trees of WIZARD OF OZ and Peter Jackson's incarnation of the walking trees of Valinor in LORD OF THE RINGS. Has it ever been determined who played the tree? david |

Of course, the most terrifying tree is The Walking Tree Of Dahomey... the one Michael Palin goes in search of in Africe in one of the original Python episodes.

What's perhaps more unbelievable than the monster itself is the fact that I've had this flick taped on VHS off cable for well over 10 years and have never seen it! I'll have to make this one a priority fairly soon.

One of Paul Blaisdell's weaknesses as a monster designer--at least I regard it as a weakness; your mileage may vary--is his propensity for sculpting scowls into his creations. I think monster design tends to work better when a neutral ex-pression is used. The Tabanga may be the ultimate ex-pression (so to speak) of this Blaisdell trait. The "face" on the tree looks like it just smelled something awful.
Still, it's SOMETHING--that is, it's a novel (if silly) menace; It doesn't appear nearly often enough in this movie to suit me. The movie enterprisingly blends voodoo and radiation as a kind of dual explanation for the tree's perambulations. |

Quote: It must have gotten a whiff of the film. Sorry but somebody had to say it.;) This was hard for me to sit through when it aired on The Ghoul's show back in the early 70's. It was a little better than say Mermaids Of Tiburon but only because it had a monster in it. "You suffer the consequences of speaking your mind if it isn't what people want to hear"-Adewale Ogunleye

Bob Burns' book "It Came From Bob's Basement" has some of Blaisdell's preproduction sketches, showing some other ideas of what the monster tree might look like. They appear to be superior to the bulkier-looking costume that was built for the film.
And I venture to say that if you came back from the dead as a killer tree, you'd probably have a scowl on your face, too, what with dogs wanting to mark their territory on you all the time. |

What is wrong with you people, From Hell It Came is one great late night movie. I remember it well from my childhood and play the taped from TV VHS whenever I get a hankering for wooden horror. The exotic locations and cinematography alone is worth the time. But as great as it is, it could use some updating. What potential for a remake. With today's technology, the Tabonga could really grow. WIth each revenge killing, he gets bigger.
Change the location slightly, and you could get some interesting monster duals, Tabonga vs PumpkinHead. Two rural families in blood revenge feud. I'm digging out the VHS tape box now. Today is only Yesterday's Tomorrow

I too was TERRIFIED of the Tabonga when I was a kid.
I got a nice "gray market" DVD copy of From Hell It Came a year or so ago. It's a really fun flick for a late night or an early morning. The thing that really haunted me most about this movie was the QUICKSAND! That tree loved to toss people into that stuff! Here's a cool colored shot from the Horror-Wood website:

Is it just me, or does that shot look like Morbius' Id monster?
