From the lovely Kathryn Grant, to the great villainy of Torin Thatcher, this movie rocks! The icing on the cake is Bernard Herrmann's score, which is rich, dramatic and hauntingly beautiful. This is my favorite of the Sinbads. Where does it rank with you, either on the Sinbad film level or as a Harryhausen vehicle?

Apr 27 07 7:36 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	7th VOYAGE was the perfect movie for an eleven year old boy in 1958--at least this eleven year old boy. I think I must have experienced every emotion possible while seeing this for the first time in a large, downtown theater. I agree, Mike--Torin Thatcher made a great villain. Herrmann's score is so evocative and, well, just about as cool as it gets. Kathryn Grant made me sit up and take notice--probably for the first time. Ray's animation in color! Wow! Richard Eyer made me envious. I wanted to be in this movie too! Kerwin Matthews was also perfectly cast and the story provided justifiable and gripping motivation for him to undertake this voyage. Harufa's death added a dimension of sorrow and loss. This is my favorite of the Schneer/Harryhausen collaborations. The only reason I cannot say it's my favorite of all Harryhausen movies is because I also saw BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS when it came out in 1953--and that's the movie which made me the Monster Kid I still am today. Apr 27 07 8:34 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	And I find JASON ponderous. To me, the greatest Arabian Nights film is indeed the 1940 THIEF OF BAGDAD--and I think Ray Harryhausen feels the same. But SEVENTH VOYAGE is terrific, and was a major surprise when it first came along.

When that cyclops storms from the cave near the beginning it's like the intrusion of the fantastic into a real color world. To me, it was positively mind-altering. Against a blue sky, rocks, trees, it evokes images as surreal as the worlds of Dali or Magritte. And I still get a chill at certain words or phrases: The Island of Colossa The Valley of the Cyclops The land beyond beyond They reinforce both the movie's sense of time and place, as well as the feeling of regions unknown and forbidding. The strangeness of turf is aided by Herrmann's lurking minor keys, telling us that anything can be around the next bend. I think the cyclops is a brilliant design. It is at once bizarre, grotesque and dynamic, yet totally convincing, as though it's biologically sound (and ya gotta love that simple horn variation). There seems something unique about it among giant movie monsters. To me I guess it's a pure monster, as opposed to an enlarged version of something already existing in nature. And its acting, of course, is some of the best in Harryhausen's bestiary. We're talking real personality here. Yeah, I guess I really really like this movie.

I saw GOLDEN VOYAGE first in a theatre, so that occupies a special place in my heart, I saw JACK THE GIANT KILLER first on TV, and I think it improves on its model in several ways, I think JASON is the best of the Harryhausen's, I want to see CAPTAIN SINBAD again more!

Just saw it again for the first time in years and first time on DVD (Just got the Sinbad box set, along with Jason...). Now that's entertainment! Sure broke a lot of barriers as far as presenting RH's work in fabulous colour Dynamation. Torin Thatcher did indeed make a great villain. Another great Herrmann score, as well---From the title Arabian music to the hollow background percussion we're treated to during the Skeleton sword fighting scene. Speaking of which, I just love that scene. The choreography and training required....What a result! Truly a historic moment when the stop-motion gets added and everything looks so lifelike. Kudos to Kerwin Matthews for learning so well from the Olympic fencing master they had on hand for his training. Love the Cyclops turning his "dinner" on a spit, and the Dragon in the cave scenes, too. The Dragon's neck being reluctantly drawn in to the cavern wall by that pully powered chain truly gives a sense of realism to the scene. Of course, the Cyclops vs Dragon scenes are great, too. What a treat! "Wait Til You See The Full Effect With The Hump!"

While I like and enjoy THE 7th VOYAGE OF SINBAD every time I watch it, I'm afraid that GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD rates as my fave Harryhausen. May 1 07 8:58 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	This was the very first movie I saw in a theater. I was about 6 years old. It ran in the old downtown theater and this was about 1976 or so. I was totally blown away. I was at the edge of my seat the whole time. The sword fight with the skeleton at the end was the most memorable moment for me...that and the cyclops I think. I totally adore this movie! *Gli zombie hanno mangiato il mio polmone sinistro*
