Destroyah featured Bandai Godzilla Series vinyl toys playing out some of the monsters. That's canon. Or was. Their multiple revisions makes it a little murky just what is and isn't canon.

Even the official Godzilla website states that FINAL WARS is the "28th instalment of the series". If they were counting GINO as part of the series it would be the 29th. The throw-away line in GMK is just that and nothing more. The line is so vague and doesn't specifically mention any of the events that occurred in GINO beyond a monster attacking America at the end of the last century. That could mean ANYTHING. Fans will see the line as a joke (as intended) because it will remind them of GINO, but that's far from asserting itself as a direct sequel. Maybe if Tachibana had consulted the Americans on an anti-Godzilla tuna strategy I could see where it could be a direct sequel to GINO ;-P Last Edited By: Jim Ballard Jul 11 09 11:53 AM. So perhaps the film isn't cannon, but its at least apocrypha. I also like how everyones got an excuse for the refrence to Zilla in GMK yet no one is willing the tackle the far greater issue that is the monster's actual appearance in Final Wars.

Jul 14 09 5:57 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	No one is excusing anything (Kaneko was slagging the Roland and Emmerich film in GMK); but in FINAL WARS (which exists in its own universe), it's a different monster altogether, designated "Zilla", which is brought to Earth by the Xillians to fight the "real" Godzilla. Since the origin is different than the Roland and Emmerich film, this creature is not the same one. It was Toho's way of saying, "This overgrown iguana is not Godzilla, folks." (Besides, FINAL WARS seems to be a (poor) parody of the genre as a whole, but that's another story for another thread. I'm sure we could go around all day about the 1933 KONG versus the 1976 film or KING KING LIVES or Peter Jackson's remake... But, isn't there more constructive (and far more interesting) discussions we can have? Well, while I'm not sure where your getting the plot point that Zilla was "brought to Earth by the Xillians" (I just re-watched Final Wars yesterday and it seems clear that he was from earth just like all the other monsters, sans Gigan and Ghidorah) I agree that there are better conversations to be had about the wonderful genre that is kaiju eiga, so I'll for one lay this to rest.

Admittedly, I saw FINAL WARS once -- at the premiere in Hollywood -- and I never want to see that train wreck again, so I may have been mistaken. With that being said, wherever the Xillians obtained Zilla is immaterial in the context of the "story"; the fact of the matter is that Zilla is treated as a new monster and not as a Godzilla in that film. UPDATE: I just referenced one of the books in my library, 「ゴジラフィナルウオーズ長全集」"GODZILLA FINAL WARS Super Encyclopedia" (edited by an old pal, Takahiko "Taki" Mamiya, and published by Shogakukan), and the character entry for Zilla on Page 23 refers to it as "A monster which appeared on America's East Coast in 1998," and was "transformed from an iguana into a monster which consumes tuna." Jul 16 09 1:42 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	August all I want to say is that I respect your opinion as one of the premiere experts in the field of kaiju eiga and think that it would be worth your while to watch Godzilla Final Wars again. When I first saw the movie I wasn't all that impressed either. However, I recently re-watched the movie as part of a mini Godzilla/Gamera movie marathon and was surprised how much I enjoyed it. I do believe that Final Wars is indeed Ryuhei Kitamura's love letter to Showa era Toho sci-fi and a damn entertaining action movie to boot. I've read a lot of negative reviews of Final Wars that criticize a number of aspects of the film, most notably what seems to be a lack of monster action verses a good deal of human action. However, go back (and here I'm not specifically talking to you August) and watch Invasion of the Astro-Monster and Destroy All Monsters the two films I think most directly influenced Final Wars. Both of these films are rather short on monster action and rather heavy of human action, especially Astro-Monster. And if its the fact that the humans are running around doing Matrix-style kung-fu as oppose to talking like they do in so many other Godzilla films all I have to say is "Really? Thats your complaint? You would really rather watch a group of actors run around talking than fighting?" As James Rolfe put it in his positive review for Final Wars, this movie is the best of all possible worlds: monster fights, spaceship fights, kung-fu fights, its practically two hours of fighting and how can you not like that?

Jul 16 09 1:05 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I love those films (MONSTER ZERO being one of my all-time favorites), but I was cringing from the opening scenes... the miniature photography was terrible, even in comparison to the previous entries, such as GODZILLA: TOKYO SOS, all of which I had seen in theaters. FINAL WARS was supposed to be the most expensive Godzilla film, ever, and the effects were shot in a manner lower than those of the 1970s -- which was intentional. One of the worst was Kamakiras sitting atop one of the flying battleships... the whole set-up was wobbly and I couldn't believe that Kitamura made this mess. So, it was painfully apparent that Kitamura (who I rallied for when people lambasted him for taking the helm on FINAL WARS), was producing a parody of the genre, but didn't know how to edit this monster together, and just did a half-assed job -- figuring he'd be off in Hollywood making films with Tarantino and Rodriquez (and he screwed up that deal, too). Now, he's making straight-to-video pabulum like MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN. Hell, Toho's disastrous THE WAR IS SPACE (1977) is far light years better than FINAL WARS, because the film has a cohesive narrative and follows all of its plot threads through to the bitter end ("Jimmy!"), and made by a veteran filmmaker. Kitamura has an obvious distain for the genre, and Japanese films in general (according to an interview in Giant Robot magazine), so he can go screw himself. If someone made a reel of just the Don Frye scenes, I would watch that; but I can't sit through FINAL WARS ever again -- and this is coming from a guy that has to watch MEGALON once a year (and THE WAR IN SPACE). I also remember his comment in Giant Robot and yeah...that was disappointing. I honestly havn't seen Versus or Azumi but did see Midnight Meat Train which was unfortunate on several fronts. Oh well....

So, when I saw the mess that was unspooled before me, I was crestfallen. But, he didn't know what kind of film to make, the execution is schizophrenic and the editing is woefully disjointed. Ugh.
