Jan 1 07 6:33 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I finally saw this film today on TCM. Hooboy, whereas the first half hour is pretty good it goes God happy by the end. I bet kids going to see this in 1952 felt totally ripped off. To quote a line from FAMILY GUY, "People in the audience look pissed." And what the heck was Peter Graves putting in his hair? At times it looks like a cap. Lol

Jan 1 07 6:47 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Yeah, I started to watch this today, but was called away and didn't see the last two-thirds. It looked hokey, but interesting. Graves screen wife had a comment early on, a response to making contact with the martians, that was well overdone. I can't quote exactly, but it was something akin to " yeah, making progress...TO OBLIVION!" Her face at that time showed no emotion at all, so I'm assuming it was dubbed. Very bizarre.

Never seen it before, either, but relatively familiar with the (controversial?) treatment of the old First Contact sf trope. My wife cheered when it was over, but at least I can say I've heard the ripest section of the dialog -- coming from that American politician speaking in Congress. Was the the President? Boy, his scriptwriter must have been fresh out of divinity school. Nevertheless, it appears to be a unique and rather interesting method of communicating powerful Cold War fears and the unwavering belief in American Exceptionalism. ... Reed

And it is interesting to see that it was based on a play by John Balderston. Ain't he the guy that did Dracula? Jan 2 07 3:48 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I enjoyed finally seeing this movie, and really think the production design is wonderful, the cinematography by Biroc is a great plus as well. That subject came up in the Amazing Colossal Man thread, and is a nice reminder to me of how he elevated so many of the films in this genre that he worked on.

His brother James Arness got to be THE THING and play one of the heroes in THEM! Meanwhile, Peter got to be in KILLERS FROM SPACE and BEGINNING OF THE END! At least he was also in STALAG 13.
