I assume most kids took part in make believe games up until a certain age. But I remember that at a certain age... maybe 8 or 9... there was a common
understanding that you were supposed to graduate to sports.
Well, I was lousy at sports and persisted in make believe games with certain friends long after it was fashionable...
One friend of mine was a fan of Lost in Space and sci-fi in general... I was more of a monster fan. We combined our interests and concocted a long-running scenario in which he was a mad scientist living on a spaceship and I was Larry Talbot, along for the ride because I hoped the Doc would concoct a cure for me at some point. There were two girls along for the ride, too, as per Lost in Space I guess, although they remained peripheral figures since we didn't know girls who were willing to act them out. It seems we kept this going for years, visiting planets, encountering other characters that we had to take turns playing, and we would always try to end our play sessions on a cliffhanger... as in: "The walls are closing in!"
We also did Star Trek (my friend as Kirk, me as Spock, both taking turns on other characters) and Planet of the Apes, which was mostly based on the short-lived 1974 TV series. And sometimes we combined these different fantasy worlds into one.
We had to abandon these games when we got to middle school and running around pretending to be in a spaceship that wasn't there was just too much of a social liability.. but we kept it going as long as we could.
I was just wondering if others here did likewise...
