Not a real fan of the Phantasm sequels, however this did catch my eye
"Universal Studios Home Entertainment has a host of horror titles coming under its "Fall of Fear" Halloween promotion. The campaign will consist of more than 40 titles, including some new releases. Below is a sampling of some new editions in the promotion." I definitely expect to see a Bd release of Brotherhood Of the Wolf (to tie-in with the new Wolf-man film), but 40 titles seems like a staggering amount of genre -centric product to be released in one promotion (though most of what they mention besides Phantasm is repackaging of exisiting titles). I thought I just read on this board not too long ago that Universal had nothing planned for Halloween? |

What most here are interested in from Universal is 30s/40s/50s.

I second dhtreptow's comments.
At this point I have practically every '30s/'40s title that I want... I'd much rather see a first-rate Region 1 release of ISLAND OF TERROR than, say, ISLAND OF LOST SOULS. 1969 was forty years ago, after all... It's high time that films from that era were treated with the same "respect" as the "really old" stuff. |

Edited title to reflect the bit about the Universal glut that may be coming (beyond re-releases).

Does this mean there's no BD planned for THE WOLF MAN? If not, I hope they release one in a set when the remake hits video.

I'm trying to figure out just what 40 titles Universal has up the sleeve, it's hard for me to imagine 90% won't just be reissues.

And SOULS is a great one, which still has some unsettling stuff in it (like the experiment on the moaning 'manimal'). 1969 was forty years ago, after all... It's high time that films from that era were treated with the same "respect" as the "really old" stuff. No argument there, at least up to around 1977.

Can't say there is anything on that list that excites me. Disappointed in seeing no mention of THE WOLF MAN being released on BR.
Maybe something in the announced 40 Uni titles may be promising, but so far it looks like this Halloween will be a bust disc-wise for me

Have you ever seen ISLAND OF LOST SOULS? I ask because I know that while you often slam 1940s Universal horror sequels, you tend to enjoy some of the "classic '30s". Not since I was a kid... Let me know the next time it ever pops up on TV, so I can DVR it. (I doubt I'd buy the DVD.) Make that most of the classic '30s Unihorrors... As for the '40s stuff, I firmly believe that the bulk of them are greatly overrated by many "Monster Kids" -- purely for reasons of nostalgia. (Whether they want to admit this or not.) |

I'll certainly admit it, and have. Who hasn't, or wouldn't? As far as I am concerned, the RKO Lewton THE BODY SNATCHER is the greatest of all '40s horrors, technically better than any Universal. Still, what's wrong with having fun with some lesser 1940s Universals, even if there are those which aren't technically "good"? But I would stand by my feeling that certain 1940s Uni's are "good", if not "great". I'd say that SON OF DRACULA, INVISIBLE MAN RETURNS, MUMMY'S HAND, GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN, FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN, and HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN are all solid, "good" horror films. And ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN -- childhood nostalgia aside -- is just a GREAT film.

It's certainly better than ISLAND OF TERROR. But ISLAND OF LOST SOULS doesn't have Peter Cushing and a horde of bone-sucking creatures in it! I just don't think Charles Laughton and a furry-faced Bela Lugosi, in black & white, can top that for sheer sci-fi/horror entertainment. |

I'm glad to hear this is hitting DVD, this will be a Halloween release to look forward to. PHANTASM II is far and away one of the better horror movies from
around this time period - it's a worthy follow up to the first one. Lots of atmosphere. III, on the other hand,
where they added the sassy lady with nunchucks and a cutesy kid ...

The press book lists this upcoming Phantasm 2 disc as being "The first time on DVD".
I've had Phantasm 2 on DVD for several years now. It was included in the Anchor Bay Region 2 Silver Sphere set. |

When they say "first time on DVD", just imagine a sinister Teutonic announcer saying "First time on DVD- for you FOOLISH
AMERICANS!!HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!' ( Actually it's also the first time for us Canadians, but I assume we're just too puny and insignificant to be
considered...)
