May 18 09 11:57 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Yes, the 1976 KING KONG stank. But it's KANE next to PJ's Kong. SOLOMON or CITIZEN? Someone mentioned GOLIATHON (aka MIGHTY PEKING MAN)...I actually kinda like that one. And then there's APE, alas. (Although it does give us a bit more of Joanna DeVarona, aka Joanna Kerns, than we usually get.) And don't overlook QUEEN KONG, which plays out like a feature-length Benny Hill skit. (Although I have to admit it was a more polished-looking film than I ever suspected it would be, once I finally saw the Image DVD...and it does include Valerie Leon in the cast.)

One of the Dragon Lee films I've seen (I think its Golden Dragon, Silver Snake) actually has the dubbing editor appear at the end of each reel!

May 28 09 7:05 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	That was pretty funny. I was just curious in regards to the ending of the film. Did King Kong destroy all 4 copters in an alternate ending? I could have swore that when I saw it here on Canadian televison in the early 80's, Kong destroyed all four copters, and then collapsed after the battle due to his wounds. If you recall, in the film Kong smashes one copter and it spins out of control and crashes into one of the towers. He then punches another copter and you hear it exploding off screen. You hear the last two fly off after Kong collapses. Well, I recall seeing that copter actually crash into the third copter and the two explode together. Kong grabs the fourth copter and pulls it apart in his arms, and then he collapses. Did this happen (unused ending) or was I imaging the whole thing?

Jun 3 09 8:27 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Most of you will roll your eyes at this, but my only all-out problem with the movie (or the only one I can ever think of) has to do with that helicopter scene. When the Jeff Bridges character saw Kong wrecking the helicopters, he cheered. Maybe I'm being a little extreme, but I couldn't help thinking, "Hey, I'm glad you want HIM to live, but what about those %^*# pilots?! Is actual CHEERING called for?"

Back then, there was a current of anti-establishment, suspicion of/hostility toward authority figures and "sticking it to the man" that gave no thought to the PC mindset of today. (Maybe not as much as there was just a few years earlier, right after Kent State, but it had yet to vanish.) In the '76 film, Kong was being victimized and his struggle to survive was all about the spectacle.

Jun 5 09 2:25 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Actually, my problem with that scene of the remake reminds me of my one problem with the original, but it's kind of a long story (or at least, one I COULD go on and on about). Often I don't have a problem with a piece of entertainment, but with its FOLLOWING, in one way or another. And my hang-up with the King Kong following (and again, I mean the original) is that a lot of people in it take that "anti-hero" idea to too many extremes (and I'm actually very ATTACHED to that idea in a lot of stories). In other words, giving him a kind of "can do no wrong" quality. So (even though I've never witnessed it) I can imagine people literally cheering when he wrecks those first few biplanes, because of a "better them than him" attitude. So in a way, the Bridges character was just having that attitude OUT LOUD.

While Kong--like the Frankenstein monster--was sympathetic, Denham wasn't quite the cad that Charles Grodin's character was in the 1976 version. The anti-hero concept would have been fairly rare, especially in escapist fare, at that point. (Probably one of the more notable exceptions being Captain Nemo from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and The Mysterious Island.)

Jun 6 09 2:17 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	In Verne's The Mysterious Island, Nemo comes across as more sympathetic than in the previous novel. After having helped the castaways survive, when he reveals his backstory we learn he was driven from his homeland when he (and other freedom fighters) tried to oppose British rule in Colonial India. (Much like the colonists of America did during the American Revolution.) The 1954 Disney film gave him an element of sympathy in spite of his obsession, as did the 1916 Universal silent production. I wonder if Nemo might be the first anti-hero...or were there earlier examples? Maybe Robin Hood? He is the hero, even though he breaks the (highly unjust) law.
