Dec 7 10 2:33 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have that DVD but for some reason have never watched it; thanks for posting those clips. First time I've seen Pichel in filmed footage as a director rather than an actor; we learn his last name was pronounced PITCH-el rather than, as I usually hear (and say) it pih-CHELL. Or even, as I hoped, PICK-ell. Also that may be the first film I've >ever< seen of Robert A. Heinlein; I was surprised to see he wore glasses at that time. He wasn't wearing them on any of the occasions in which I met him, nor in any publicity photos, nor even in the photo the LA Times ran of him and his wife figure-skating (in the obituary on his wife Virginia). I wonder who the Naval officer was? Heinlein originally planned on becoming a Naval officer himself, but a medical problem precluded him from joining any of the armed services. I think he was attached to the Navy during World War II, when he did scientific stuff for the U.S.

Dec 8 10 10:45 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	It's a great disc, Bill; another bonus feature is an interview with Pal in his office (can't recall if this was while THE POWER was in production, or if it was during preproduction on DOC SAVAGE...I seem to recall the theatrical promo for DOC is on the disc as well). At any rate, in Pal's office a poster of Lang's METROPOLIS can be seen resting against the wall behind the producer's chair. Always brings a smile to my face when I see that.

Nov 24 11 6:56 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I remember my introduction to his stop motion work... it was one of the last Puppetoons he ever produced... perhaps even THE last... Called "The Toolbox" it was about the titular box, and all the happy tools that lived within it... until a dragon-like blowtorch shows up. None of the other tools can stop it's terror rampage, until a tiny carpet tack drives itself into the torch's fuel container, and causes it to "bleed" to death... Happiness is restored! It was shown on the Chuck Jones kids show, back in the 1970's... "The Curiosity Shop." I haven't seen it surface again. "[The audiance] will populate the darkness with more horrors than all the horror writers in Hollywood could think of. If you make the screen dark enough, the mind's eye will read anything into it you want! We're great ones for the dark patches." -VAL LEWTON

Hey, I never saw the finished TOOLBOX but I remember that is what Gene Warren was working on when I visited him at his studio called Excelsior! Animated Moving Pictures. May 24 12 3:00 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I've never seen THE TOOLBOX, but I recall George Pal talking about it (and Chuck Jones) in that great interview Castle of Frankenstein did with him in issue #25. In those pre-Starlog days, that interview (and an earlier two-part interview with Ray Harryhausen in CoF) was a treasure trove of information you simply couldn't find anywhere else.
