The page you scanned is indeed present in both of the Charlton issues I have; although your scan looks much better than the same ad in my mags. I'm very familiar with that odd Phantom. Like you, I was puzzled and fascinated by it and speculated to no end, going through similar possibilities such as Cagney and the "Wheeler" Phantom mask. Never could resolve it. It's almost as though the skinflints at Charlton didn't want to pay to use another official studio still so they photographed some guy in a mask to cut corners. I'm not completely convinced that it couldn't be a makeup job, but if it is a mask Burman's Phantom would top my list of possible suspects available at that time, with some noticeable differences as you've mentioned. And your suggestion that it could be a customized version of Burman's Phantom is another possibility we can toss into the stew. The mystery Phantom's mouth almost resembles that of the later Don Post calendar Phantom. Of course, the same mask can look very different depending upon who's modeling it. And the lighting and shadows of the black & white photo can exaggerate the actual depth of contours. But in the end all we can do is file this one under Unsolved Mysteries. Thanks for another great Bob Burns photo. These color photos are still the best shots of the early Burman masks out there.tony vincenzo: What an interesting series of pix. I'm sure I must have seen in the past the one featuring Tor Johnson (with hair!) in the Bert Wheeler shop, but I didn't recall it. And the 1964 snap of Frankenstein's monster in what appears to be a Korean whorehouse certainly places him in an environment Burman never envisioned!
