And Aupperle, please tell Mr. Cardi next time you speak with him that I'm flattered by his response. My generation has our share of monster kids, we just had to go about it differently. And he's right on the money, it still exists to this day. I showed Godzilla vs. Mothra to the seven year old son of a friend of mine the other day and he LOVED it. He had never seen a Godzilla film. Nor any film like that ever, I think. But afterward he was marching around the house with my old foot-tall rubber Godzilla figure from when I was his age (they don't make many toys that last like that anymore), laying waste to Tokyo. Then he's out in the pool with him fighting the Navy! I realized he was doing the exact same things I did at that age. "Oh my god, he might have the bug", I thought.

So yeah, I think it will always exist to a degree, the internet being the most likely outlet for it. In my childhood during The Last Days Before The Internet, it was kind of tough. Old school monster magazines didn't really exist. There weren't weekend matinees, drive-ins, or any of the old horror host shows. Anything you learned were from books, or a magazine article you chanced upon. Movies were whatever you could find in the TV guide on Sunday and get your parents to help you program the VCR, since they were on at three in the morning. Or that you were lucky enough to find at the video store, or to rent.
You had this generation of kids sifting through books and waiting for MonsterVision to come on, which often resulted in a very personal experience, since we didn't see many monster movies in theatres and spent so much time reading up on stuff. James Rolfe of Cinemassacre.com is the best example to come to my mind, many of the experiences he talks about in his film reviews are identical to things that happened to myself. I can't really think of anyone else in my age group off the top of my head doing something with that kind of fun-hearted monster loving flavor.

Maybe with the internet as the new way to experience things like this, and it's emphasis on communication, new generations will love these movies, and not have their experiences be so.. I don't know... Insular? But anyway, I'm sure there will always be a new young audience that will go for the lower budget films. And stop motion dinosaurs.
