I'm thinking about replacing my GoodTimes DVD of this film with the RetroMedia release, but I've been hearing complaints from some about changes made to the movie and that the image isn't as good as it could be. I know the transfer was supposed to have used both 35mm and 16mm source material, but what kind of "changes" are we looking at? (CGI replacement of original FX? Missing material?)

As far as image quality goes the RetroMedia release is a nice improvement over the old GoodTimes DVD. The only changes to the original film that I noticed were a few instances of adding lens flares and glows to the laser beams and the shuttle craft. Speaking as the person who created the original effects those alterations didn't bother me at all. There is a possibility that a much better looking DVD of PLANET could be released at some point in the future but at this time there are no definite plans set for that. Just a reminder that we'll be having a PLANET OF DINOSAURS night at the Cine-Saurus in Fullerton, CA on Saturday, March 20. Earlier in the month world famous illustrator William Stout will give a presentation of his paleontological art on March 6. The plan is that Stephen Czerkas and Doug Beswick will be there with me to talk about our little epic. Apr 14 10 1:36 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Man, I loved this movie as a kid. It was one of the first dinosaur movies my dad bought for me on VHS* and I still have that same copy. I'd really like to upgrade to DVD for this one, but I've just never gotten around to it. *"Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend" was on TV that same night so my dad didn't want to buy me something I probably wouldn't watch, but he finally caved and purchased the tape. As I remember it, I put PoD in and forgot all about Baby!

I gather the Retromedia disc isn't perfect, but at least it will be nice to see this on DVD as compared to the faded tape I've been watching for 15 years.

Don't expect the film to be digitially cleaned up like a major studio release, but this is certainly the best I've ever seen the film look. (And an entertaining and informative commentary track, as well.)

It came up briefly in a conversation and he told me getting people to talk about their work was like pulling teeth and one FX technician (whose name I don't recall) basically just sat by himself and said nothing. It's still better than the commentary for Flesh Gordon in which the producer barely discusses the movie at all, instead reading a prepared diatribe about his legal troubles --- which stops about half an hour before the movie ends. The rest, as they say, is silence.

Totally agree with you on the FLESH GORDON commentary track. (And finding that one was no easy task, as there's no commentary option listed onscreen; you have to use the audio button on your remote to bring it up.)

Enjoyed the dinos, enjoyed the ladies (too bad about the one that got chomped,) and I just remembered the line about: "This is not the time to play at being Tarzan!" What? This is exactly the time for that! Look forward to watching the DVD with my kids, as soon as I get it. Not only JPIII is my favorite of the three, I can't stand to rewatch I or II. Apr 22 10 9:13 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I think the first JURASSIC PARK holds up well enough, and I really like JP 3 (would have liked more Laura Dern though), but that second film certainly could have been better. If you watch the DVD, there are some deleted scenes that actually would have punched up the plot and characters had the footage been left in and the predictable gymnastics nonsense been left out. (When Goldblum's daughter mentions she was cut from the gymnastics team, nearly everyone in the theater groaned and said she'd be dodging raptors with gym moves before it was all over. Gee, what a surprise.) I'm talking specifically about the sequence with Pete Postlethwaite's character. We see him save a girl from being abused and harassed, hear him talk about being burned out and questioning what he did as a big game hunter...moments that really rounded him out and kept him from being the shallow fellow he comes across in the final cut. In addition, we are shown his long friendship with Harvey Jason's character, which makes Jason's death have meaning. (In the final cut, when Postlethwaite says the man is dead, the line has no longer has any real meaning and just seems to come out of the blue.)

It defines that moment in time for me, when I saw the sneak preview on a Thursday night in 1994 and simply couldn't believe my eyes. I was totally blown away and enchanted by that film and I'll always feel that when I watch it. THE LOST WORLD sequel got on my nerves. Too self-consciously cutesy and heavy-handed for me. And familiar. It was like reliving the first film only we'd already been there and done that. JURASSIC PARK 3 I loved. New dinos, non-stop action, and the return of Sam Neil. I think the darker tone made this more of an old fashioned monster movie, which I love about it. The divorced husband and wife are ridiculous and irritating, but I just ignore them most of the time. I thought Harryhausen would step in to consult some modern day stop motion animators. Then...I saw it. WOW! Because of that movie, I got interested in 3D and started working in CG as a hobby, making, of course dinosaurs! Yeah, I can't get my head around the second one. I just watch the dino scenes occasionally. JP3 is much more enjoyable to watch. It's like a 50s movie with great effects. Love all the behind the scenes stuff on that disc.

If you were to step outside right now and find a real live T-rex on your front lawn, you're gonna be nonchalant? And the kids are awful: Veggiesaurs... really? It's not exactly Mel Brooks & Carl Reiner caliber, but to me the line plays real because that's exactly the kind of stuff I heard kids say during that very brief stint as a substitute teacher. (An experience far more terrifying than finding a T-rex on the front lawn.)

I was working on NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS and one day the word descended on our shop that over at Jurassic Park the stop-motion was suddenly out and CG was in big time. We were in such a state of shock with that news and I know that the JP stop-mo crew felt a whole lot worse. After both films came out it was Phil Tippett who urged me to start learning all I could about computer animation. I followed Phil's advice and (much to my surprise) found myself working on CG dinosaurs a couple of years later. I miss the puppets and the stage work but I feel lucky to have been involved with those as long as I was and then to get a chance to try something related (still mostly do the lighting) but still new. Apr 22 10 11:07 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I first saw Jurassic Park as a Chinese bootleg. I didn't realize at the time that they'd actually pared the film down, removing a lot of the rather tedious dialogue scenes. It was done very smoothly and I never knew anything was missing until I finally saw the US version and wondered why it seemed to drag more than I remembered. I think it's a good film, and the tyrannosaurus attack on the tram car is a suburb scene. Up until one of the cars magically drives down the side of a tree, that it, which is idiotic. I was watching it with my four year old nephew who just shook his head in sad disbelief.
