Apr 22 09 4:52 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	My film studies class this year has only eight students, and they are very receptive to all films. This week and last, we've been exploring musicals (not one of my favorite genres, to be honest). Last week was YANKEE DOODLE DANDY and this week we are in the midst of SINGING IN THE RAIN. Good reaction from the class on both. For classic horror, we watched THE WOLF MAN and CAT PEOPLE -- the "bus" scene in the latter made a few jump. (We would watch FRANKENSTEIN and/or BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, but many have already seen those in Humanities class taught by a colleague.

Jul 30 09 9:13 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Having just rewatched THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME on TCM, I have one major question. First TMDG was filmed just before KING KONG on some of the KONG sets and directed by one of Kong's directors, Ernest B. Schoedsack (and Irving Pichel). Fay Wray and Robert Armstrong are cast members who also appear in KONG. GAME stars Joel McCrea but it is Bruce Cabot in KONG. Does anyone know if McCrea was up for the lead in KONG and/or tested but Cabot got the role? Just wondering.

Actually, I'd say there's only one real, genuine remake (GAME OF DEATH) and the others (RUN FOR THE SUN, BLOODLUST, HARD TARGET, SLAVE GIRLS FROM BEYOND INFINITY, a zillion more), whatever the credits read, are more rip-off than remake. The original is the ONLY way to go.

And then there's that Cornell Wilde one, and the one that Walter Hill did with an urban setting & homeless guys... and let's not forget "Lost in Space"'s "Hunter's Moon" episode. But I thought that there were others that were fairly straight ahead remakes that I could choose from.

Jul 31 09 1:02 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	In an interview I read with McCrea years ago he said that he was offered the Bruce Cabot part in King Kong and turned it down. He was with RKO then and an up and comer; Cabot was unknown at the time. McCrea apparently just didn't care for the script. Not his cup of tea, I guess. He said that he felt that after seeing the film that he'd made the right decision. The only parts of the movie that worked in his opinion was the stuff with the animals. So there you have it. (I like McCrea but am glad he turned down the first mate role in Kong. Cabot was perfect in the part. Even his sometimes amateurish line readings worked in the context of his scenes. Also, Cabot had a feral quality to him, was somewhat scary looking, to me anyway, and photographed as rather ape-like from certain angles, which made him an interesting match for Fay Wray.)

I don't know about the Warren magazines, but I always remember a magazine issue by Eerie Publishing that had a Most Dangerous Game kind of story. I've been told it was probably Tales From The Tomb 4 / 70, but I've never been able to get that one to find out for sure.

We recall good ol' Andy Griffith being the psychotic star, and he 'hunted' someone in an arrid place- Texas, the desert, something- using a long range rifle and a tiger. By the IDMB, I guess it was SAVAGES (1974), but the description of the movie on there sounds different than our memories recall.

Parodies have even ended up in cartoons, like American Dad and Johnny Bravo. In that one, Johnny makes such bad choices when trying to escape (like hiding in a corner of a room with a lampshade on his head), that the hunter finally gives up in disgust.

Have you ever seen that Robert Mitchum movie-- HIS KIND OF WOMAN, maybe? -- where he's in a small resort on the Pacific Coast of Mexico battling gangsters who want to steal his face? Vincent Price plays a hammy movie star with a love of big-game hunting-- you can totally see where he would've gone with the Zoroff role.

Aug 1 09 3:17 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The writer of the LOST IN SPACE episode "Hunter's Moon" was disappointed in the casting for Megazor. The writer wanted someone more threatening, like Michael Ansara (which, admittedly, would have been great). I think the episode works well anyway, and I like the John/Robot team-up which really should have happened more often. THE INCREDIBLE HULK TV show did a version of the story, called "The Snare." It starts out with the hunter kidnapping Banner for his latest game, but when he sees Banner turn into the Hulk decides that the Creature would make for a better target. There's a great/disturbing scene when the hunter sadistically whips Banner, wanting to induce the metamorphosis. There was a pretty good version in the LOGAN'S RUN series called "Capture." It forced Logan and Francis to have to work together to escape. I have some vague recollection that Bonanza did something like this. All I remember was that Little Joe was alone in a desert trying to escape a guy who was chasing him. Anyone know anything about this? "I live the unknown, I love the unknown... I AM the unknown."
