Heah, I just wanted to weigh in on behalf of the "younger group" I'm 31 and I have pretty much led the charge against the Kindle in my neck of the woods, for a lot of the same reasons that you guys pointed out, but also a few others.

Many of our favorites will NEVER EVER be able to be properly adapted to the Kindle. Imagine Lucas's amazing Bava book squeezed into the pathetic tiny plastic frame of the Kindle. Now imagine Don Quixote with the elegant Dore woodcuts on a Kindle. Now, imagine ANY ART BOOK YOU HAVE EVERY SEEN, EVER on that thing. OK, now quick think of something else before you start writing inflammatory letters to Amazon.

OK, now consider the artistry of book binding, the time honored tradition of making a work of art out of the creation of a book. ANYONE that has ever seen one of those 19th century family Bibles knows what I mean (or Lucas's Bava book for that matter). Consider the recent tradition of prestige format art books or the REALLY recent tradition of high end comic books (as I think, dreamily, of my gorgeous hardbound, slipped cases, 16" tall, 3" thick Sandman books at home waiting for me like the most devoted of companions)

OK, NOW, consider the very real Orwellian implications of this device. Wait, wait, before you write me off as a conspiracy theorist nut job let me offer this...Once something is in print it, at least in theory, lasts forever, because there will (almost) always be a copy, because it can be duplicated (especially now days) and because there are just so damn many copies (even in a low print run of just a few hundreds. This has always been one of prints greatest strengths. You can silence a person but you cannot silence his words once they have spread, unpopular ideas have always found flight on the wings of print. A story cannot be erased, cannot be "taken back" once its out there. If we're all using digital media that does not really exist the news stories can change in an instant and all we have is a memory of what we're pretty sure it said. Yeah, this sounds crazy but its been a crazy decade.

Words have WEIGHT in print, they EXIST, the each letter of the printed page is composed of a portion of ink so small as to almost be insignificant but it does still exist.

The smell, feel of print. I live in Dallas and we have, thank the gods, a lot of used book stores and the smell, the feel, the general presence of books is something that, ironically, cannot be conveyed in words. you either agree with me on that one or think I'm a nutty book sniffer.

I take print very seriously but I also LOVE the promise of technology. I love blogs, I love internet forums I love digital video, I love digital editing, etc.. but I love those things because they offer something that was unavailable before, but make no mistake the Kindle is not one of those. But it will persevere because a lot of what I just said above no one really cares about.
