WB reps just announced on the HTF chat that by this Halloween, they'll have a DVD set at retail consisting of: * THE WALKING DEAD (remastered) * YOU'LL FIND OUT (remastered) * ZOMBIES ON BROADWAY (remastered) * FRANKENSTEIN 1970 (remastered, 16x9)

Well, they've been promising it for 2 - 3 years now, so hopefully this time it will actually happen! I hope BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS is also included--make
it a Karloff/Lugosi/Lorre set instead!

Greg Mank did a WALKING DEAD commentary. For FRANKENSTEIN 1970, co-star Charlotte Austin, Bob Burns and I did one. Fingers crossed, after all these years, that
WB remembers we all DID this stuff, and includes it!

Warners also mentioned:
--New anniversary edition of GREMLINS this year for BD --The DARK SHADOWS films will coming out when the Depp film comes out --GREEN SLIME was on the schedule but was pulled --THX-1138 will come to BD next year. --More Tarzan and Charlie Chan films are in the works, and their remaining A & C films --No plans for any Hammer films on BD.

Also, I got to ask a question, non-horror-related, in the very first round of the chat--
Peter_M_Fitzgerald: "Does Warner control the Tarzan films of the late 1950s and the 1960s, that were distributed by other studios to theaters?" WB: "We own the ENTIRE Tarzan feature film library regardless of who originally released them to theaters. They will ALL be coming out in the near future." Unspecified whether this will be retail DVDs or through Warner Archive, though in answer to other questions in the chat, they said they're doing the Monogram CHARLIE CHAN series and BOWERY BOYS as retail sets. Someone wisely asked about THE GREEN SLIME; their answer: "We had THE GREEEEEN SLIME on the release schedule and it got pulled.... We hope to get it back on the schedule shortly... as is the case for WILD WILD PLANET and other delights." "I say ALL you scientists are CRACKPOTS! Nothing is going to happen..."

Why not add Genius at Work to go along with Zombies on Broadway? Otherwise it will NEVER be released. Unless it is brought out as a WB Archive. |

I'm very happy in that the horror set I was hoping for will be coming for Halloween (FRANKENSTEIN 1970, THE WALKING DEAD, YOU'LL FIND OUT, and ZOMBIES
ON BROADWAY). One might nitpick because Peter Lorre in THE BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS was relegated to the "Warner Archive" reject pile. I think BEAST
WITH FIVE FINGERS would have fit very well in the Halloween set with the other 4 films though .... in addition to starring in BEAST, Peter Lorre also is also
in YOU'LL FIND OUT, so this could have been a 5-movie package hilighting Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi and Peter Lorre. But at least we'll be getting all
of these one way or another.
It was also a relief to hear Warner say they're going ahead with The Bowery Boys, probably for 2010 (sounds mighty futuristic for Slip and the Gang). Omega Man gripes: I'd much rather have a widescreen 16x9 GREEN SLIME than any of the pics in that Karloff/Lugosi set... Oh, I'm sure you would. Just like you'd rather have a MST3K film or a Santo movie over A&C MEET FRANKENSTEIN. Tough Toenails!

Cool news, I look forward to having a quality Halloween release with a couple of titles I haven't seen (or seen in awhile). Was it mentioned in the chat
if Warner has given up on those double features that were Best Buy exclusives then later went wider market?
I am especially excited to hear that the rest of the Monogram Charlie Chans are in the pipeline. Those are total cinematic comfort food to me! |
