Meanwhile. back at the ranch --- there's one sure way to avoid being gouged and disappointed by the Warner Archives dvds. Don't buy them.
I would agree about the titles that are being solicited on Amazon. The quibble that I would have about this would be to ask Warner what the point would be in developing an exclusive dvd on demand program only to end up farming the product out to a third party at a price one third higher than the previous in house sales. Warner has already set a value on their discs. Knowing that I would be hard pressed to buy one of the Amazon discs.
I would reiterate that the nine discs I have look pretty good. Better than some of the studio general release titles in my collection. And, as to the failure rate of these discs only time will tell. When that time comes we can raise some hell, but it's way to early for that.
All things considered I can't believe that there is more speculation about the potential for the failure rate of these discs than there was for the abysmal dvd18 format that Universal used for a couple of years. I posted numerous comments about the unreliability of those discs with very little response. At least the Warner Archive discs are playing NOW. The same couldn't be said for Universal's procuct.
I also can't believe that Warner's on demand price is raising so many hackles but Criterion dvds are viewed as a desirable commodity. I have a lot of dvds and probably less than a dozen, maybe even a half dozen, are Criterion discs. And those were purchased early in the dvd era when etailers were cutting each others throats with low prices in hopes of being the last dvd etailer standing. Would I buy another Criterion disc some day? Maybe --- some day. But for now I would consider the Warner Archive releases to be a much better value. But, I did the same thing that sharpe747 suggested. I purchsed my first batch of titles with a 25% off coupon. With the coupon I could purchase up to five titles. One of the titles I chose was the Tarzan bundle, which counted as one title. Each of the Tarzan films cost $7.50 after bundling and the coupon. How are you going to beat that for a custom made dvd service??? The other titles, after the coupon, were about $15 each. Considering that they were three silent films and the Hepburn film I mentioned, and further considering the current marketing trends away from classic films, short of buying a dvd recorder and waiting for TCM to run these films this was the only way to see them.
Whenever we get a disc that is a disappointment we should post the title, like Sam33 did. Forewarned is forearmed.
