May 1 12 3:40 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	It's strange because their own site FAQ commits them to replacing any Archive disc that fails, with no time limits. As I recall, they put that up after a number of folks either on here or over on the HTF flagged up their concerns about the use of DVDR's as long term storage media. Although I believe that DVDR is regarded as reasonably stable as an archive medium, with a lengthy expected lifespan, there can be no doubt that they can and do fail. The cheaper the manufacture and lower quality the materials the more likely that becomes. The problem is, you need to know what you're buying - brand name is no guarantee of quality, since many just rebadge cheap and nasty discs with inferior dyes. And even one with a good reputation can change sources without you knowing. I'm not sure it's even practical to expect the Archive to check every batch of blanks it buys to see where it was manufactured and the dyes used. I'd never use anything but a Japanese made disc using Taiyo Yuden dyes. And I've even had one of those fail spontaneously - it was kept unde rideal conditions, I took it out and there was a band of fading. It was unreadable. IMHO, the committment made by Warner to always replaced dead discs is therefore absolutely critical. If they don't, it seriously undermines the MOD program. Warner have a good rep for customer service and fixing disc problems. I hope that hasn't changed. Much as I dislike the concept and the price, I do own some Archive discs.

I agree, Bela. I'd be all over their streaming service if it's all WA titles available at once. But if they're going to drip them out, rotate them, pull them, etc., that could be a deal-killer for me. And (for the most part), they don't have the excuse of rotating rights issues that Netflix has to deal with. (Yes, this is written in hopes WA staffers read this board... )

I think it was just a case of the CSR I got that wasn't familiar with the differences between the WBshop and the Archive as far as returns/warranty issues go. Wanted to wait until this was fully resolved before commenting further and now I can finally update this- During the initial call, they had all my information without me giving it to them- name/address/account history, etc obviously tied into caller ID. They left me with the impression that eventually someone 'higher up' would likely get back to me at some point. This never happened. Instead, Thursday or Friday UPS dropped off a package containing another new Daktari set. In the mean time, I took the original set to a third separate player, and on this player, the discs played with just a little lag in load times. So they were not blank after all, just not mixing with the two drives that have been able to play all my other archives titles. The only problem for me is that the system it plays on is my projector/HT system, and that's not where I watch TV content like this anymore. Especially fare that is more ideal for a week-end afternoon like this. Nothing like first world problems, eh? Anyway, I found this out before I received or even knew they sent a replacement set. When I got it, I immediately called them up and told them the new details, and asked what would be the best way to send it back without opening it up. The CSR told, I might as well just go ahead and try this one and see if it would place on the older drives, and that they didn't need it back once it was open. I now feel both bad about having two sets, and frustrated that neither will play on the system I watch TV content on. There are other MOD TV sets I'd like to pick up, but if I have to turn on the projector to watch an episode, I just won't buy them- but that's just a issue of personal convenience for me. As far as customer service and warranty issues go with this program, the Warner Archive came through after all, and I can go back to being a cheerleader for the program. As long as they support the product down the line, I have absolutely no problem continuing to build a collection of titles- I still love the program and the ability to see (and own) many, many titles I otherwise wouldn't be able to (not having cable) and that are of a much more limited niche appeal. For a movie fiend, just having access to this material is a relief. Although after this I'll likely just stick to single movie titles from now on.

Given this issue and the cost of producing discs, I think Warner should stop making their own DVD-Rs, and make downloading the only option. The downloaded files should be configured so that customers can burn them to DVD-Rs that are playable on any DVD or Blu-Ray player. Since the WB Shop has a record of your purchases, you could simply request to download the files again should your hard drive or DVD-Rs ever fail. That way customers wouldn't have to worry about replacing discs through Warner, and Warner wouldn't have to purchase special and expensive DVD-Rs. The Windows download option they offer now is simply not worth the money. Even though these files can be burned to DVD-R by the customer, they apparently aren't standard MPEG2 compression, and can only be played with a special player on the PC on which they were downloaded. Such a disc is useless for anyone who doesn't have their PC connected to their TV, which I would guess is most people at this point. While allowing people to burn their own discs creates the potential for copying, I'm sure Warner could come up with some scheme to limit the number of times a downloaded file can be burned to disc. Sorry I didn't catch this earlier- The only other time I talked to another rep, was when I called up after getting the replacement package. I just got whoever answered the phone- but apparently someone set the first guy I dealt with right, because they got the replacement out the next day after the first call. If you make a copy of the original set DVD on your computer or with other equipment, you might find that the copy DVD plays better than the original on your other players. The problem was, this wasn't being recognized on my mac mini. Can't make a back-up if the original only comes up as a blank.
