Mar 27 13 6:17 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I suppose this is old news but I just noticed that the WA is now offering Karloff's films: BEFORE I HANG, THE BLACK ROOM, and THE BOOGIE MAN WILL GET YOU. This is somewhat surprising to me, as I didn't realize they had the Columbia stuff. I would advise anyone out there who's been sitting on the fence about purchasing Boris' "Mad Doctor Series" to quickly order the old 2006 Sony release of these films (ICONS OF HORROR: BORIS KARLOFF) while the set is still available cheaply, and you can get all the films on officially 'pressed' DVDs. This older set is currently offered on Amazon for only $16.48 for four films --- cheaper than buying ONE of the MOD DVD-Rs! "Guy named Squeamy got thrown from the fifth floor. He's deader'n a mackerel."

Sony/Columbia wisely (in my view) joined forces with WA to pool back-office MOD DVD functions -- production/storage/distribution/accounting, etc. As a result, they also market Columbia Classics MODs via the WA site (in addition to Sony'sown regular DVD site). MGM/UA also partnered with WA (thus you'll also see a MGM section on the WA site) but, alas, MGM seems to be inactive on its MOD program for the time being, as noted elsewhere on CHFB.

Apr 11 13 4:25 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Now up for pre-order: "Forbidden Hollywood Vol. 7" featuring the pre-code oddity Hatchet Man (1932), which is discussed in the Price & Turner book "Human Monsters." Edward G. Robinson plays the titular Chinatown (?!) assassin who's handy with a cleaver. Also up for pre-order is a box-set of Nick & Nora-style mysteries featuring a bookish couple, all including the word "Fast" but each time played by different actors/actresses. (All have aired on TCM if I recall...)

Apr 12 13 7:55 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Edward G. Robinson in THE HATCHET MAN is indeed a thing of wonder. The early scenes, in which he wears the Hollywood version of traditional Chinese clothing, and speaks fortune cookie dialogue that Warner Oland might have rejected as too hokey, will leave you gasping in amazement, but perhaps even more remarkable is the long middle section. Then Robinson's character has become modernized; he wears a suit and tie, and speaks idiomatic English with Robinson's usual accent; the only indication of his ethnicity is a slight slant to his eyes. One can for long minutes forget that the character is supposed to be Chinese. What is most bizarre is that several of the smaller roles are played by actual Asian-American actors. Apparently, the director believed that Robinson and the other leads (Loretta Young, Dudley Digges, Tully Marshall, Charles Middleton, etc.) were so convincing as Chinese that they would fit right in with the real thing.

Apr 23 13 12:55 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Yep, I posted in the New Releases thread that the latest WA output includes the very rare and outstanding Monogram noir The Fall Guy (1947), from a Cornell Woolrich story and starring Sean Penn's dad, Leo (who was blacklisted in the '50s) as the titular patsy. Can't recommend this surprisingly/pleasantly sleazy title enough to '40s noir buffs. Also of interest to many CHFBers is the release of six Bomba jungle-boy titles.

Apr 23 13 6:44 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	BOMBA Vol 1 will include BOMBA THE JUNGLE BOY, BOMBA ON PANTHER ISLAND, THE LOST VOLCANO, THE HIDDEN CITY, THE LION HUNTERS & ELEPHANT STAMPEDE. I find the Bomba films dull as dishwater. Now if WA comes out with JUNGLE JIM sets, I`ll bite.
