Is "Idiocracy" really a science fiction film?

Mar 11 09 9:55 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I caught this film just this last weekend on the Comedy channel. I had completely missed it when it was in the theatres. Yes, it's a really, really stupid, crass film. Typical humor of Mike Judge, (of Beavis and Butt head fame) but... I was rather impressed with how he got the idea across that the "birth dearth" between folks who are intelligent about their procreation and those who are not leads to a near disaster for mankind. It just made me wonder... How many of you have seen this, and consider it a science fiction film in the "...if this goes on" sub-genre? Mar 11 09 11:23 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I wouldn't consider it a stoner comedy in the Cheech & Chong/Harold & Kumar mode, not at all. It's a broad satire and it is science fiction, as you say, in the "if this goes on" category like C.M. Kornbluth's "The Marching Morons." Just about any kind of movie can be science fiction--musical, mystery, Western, etc. This is satiric science fiction, or maybe a science fiction satire. It seemed very intelligent to me, not at all stupid, though it is >about< stupidity.

Never a fan of Beavus & Butthead, I only truly saw the Spike and Mike Animation Festival chapters, I've been surprised by all the Judge's feature films I've seen including Do America. While I found Idiocracy ultimately disappointing, I thought that whole bit about smart people vs stupid people breeding was spot-on and darned funny. Mar 11 09 7:06 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Definitely science-fiction. I was not a big fan of Beavis and Butthead and I haven't seen DR. AMERICA (never even heard of it), but I think his OFFICE SPACE is genuinely, and uniquely hilarious. Between that and loving the notion of IDIOCRACY, I had high hopes. But it really is almost a complete misfire. Very disappointing.

I'm amazed by how many people haven't seen it, but then, if you remember that Fox freaked out when they found out what Judge had produced and only allowed it to play in a handful of cities live maybe it shoud come as no surprise at all. They thought they were getting another Office Space or Beavis and Butthead...but the joke was definitely on them this time. But that's only because I don't have a section for movies that predict how bad things could turn out. Watching Idiocracy was semi-depressing for me. I don't have to fast-forward 500 years to see it. It's happening right now.

Though I don't think it's an intentional genre spoof, per se, so much as a dark comedy that just happens to have what we'd classify as sci-fi elements in it. OTOH since the premise is just a update of the Rip van Winkle yarn I suppose you could just as easily label it fantasy, but if you go looking for it in the stores you'll find on the shelf in the comedy section.

Mar 25 09 3:55 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I liked this a lot and laughed a lot, too. It takes many current trends/topical situations and takes them to their ultimate, ridiculous extremes. I've introduced many friends to this film and -- after they ask, "Why haven't I seen this already?" -- it's always gotten a positive response. And yes, I think it's science fiction.

Couldn't sit through the whole thing when I first discovered it on one of the cable movie channels, but the opening "birth dearth" bit would have been worth the price of admission. And yes, it ain't just fiction ....
