Is this a similar Amazon DVD-R situation like with Abominable Snowman? No mention at all of this release at the Anchor Bay website.

Could this be an Anchor Bay upgrade?
With no announcement or press release? Amazon says "In stock." I would buy it right now, except I'm not sure if it isn't a burn-on-demand DVD-R. Several of the oop Anchor Bay titles are being sold as burn-on-demand DVD-R's by amazon. Richard

or a couple of episodes of the World of Hammer and Francis Matthews' brother's home movies?

Don't get your hopes up. The AB site doesn't even have a listing for DPOD.

The Anchor Bay DPOD was double sided, wasn't it? Maybe that's what it refers to. Or maybe the second disc is SATANIC RITES...they were doubled up once.
Weird...

or a couple of episodes of the World of Hammer and Francis Matthews' brother's home movies? An episode of WORLD and the home movies were bonus features on the original single DVD release. Or maybe the second disc is SATANIC RITES...they were doubled up once.I wondered about that two, as Anchor Bay released 10 two-DVD sets of their first 20 Hammer DVDs. (The Quatermass films were paired together, the two Christopher Lee Dracula titles were paired together, etc. Wish they would have paired those as the theatrical double features they had originally been, such as DRACULA PRINCE OF DARKNESS/PLAGUE OF ZOMBIES, FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN/THE MUMMY'S SHROUD, and so on.) Since it doesn't list that second Dracula title for this, it may be they've simply taken the flip side bonus material of the old DPOD disc and gave each side of that old "flipper" its own DVD-R. (The only other idea that comes to mind is they've raided the SCARS OF DRACULA. The initial run of those included a bonus DVD that had a video visit with Christopher Lee, along with two music videos he had appeared in. At that same time, the initial run of BLOOD FROM THE MUMMY'S TOMB came with a bonus DVD of Hammer trailers...a compilation of all the Hammer trailers used as bonus features on previous Hammer releases.) I've seen too many DVD-Rs become unplayable over a short period of time to risk something like this. |

Really? I was joking, what with interesting Hammer extras being thin on the ground. I never saw the DVD release. |

It doesn't matter to me unless the copy is better than the original and in anamorphic widescreen. Caveat Emptor.

My understanding is that AB is doing it through amazon. Several of AB's oop Hammer titles started appearing last fall as burn-on-demand. They all say
released by Anchor Bay in the description.
I'll pass. Richard

Yeah, it'll be 2 discs, each a burn of the 2 flipper sides of the original release. These Hammers Anchor Bay did were great, IMO, and seems they should
re-release them, if OOP, or send them over to Blue Underground.

The Anchor Bay release of DPOD has some nice extras, but it's a shame that the film itself is non-anamorphic. A good alternative is the R2 version from Optimum which features a superior print - and is 16:9 enhanced. |

Not only is the AB dvd non-anamorphic, it's too dark and really a poor quality print that was used. The Optimum is much better, but still shows that the
movie is in need of a new transfer from the original neg (if it still exists). I've read that the Italian Passworld dvd is quite nice - still somewhat dark
but sharper. I've meant to pick it up and may do so, esp since today was payday and I've already seen the benefits of Stimulus Bill's tax
changes...yay!

seems they should re-release them, if OOP, or send them over to Blue Underground.Given how many Euro-horror titles from Anchor Bay did end up at Blue Underground, I was surprised the Hammer inventory didn't make the migration. But they may have decided to hang onto those earlier titles since they would release a later wave of Hammer DVDs (BLOOD FROM THE MUMMY'S TOMB, SCARS OF DRACULA, HORROR OF FRANKENSTEIN, LUST FOR A VAMPIRE, NOTHING BUT THE NIGHT, DEMONS OF THE MIND, DR. JEKYLL AND SISTER HYDE and STRAIGHT ON TILL MORNING.) Really? I was joking, what with interesting Hammer extras being thin on the ground. Most of those first Hammer DVDs from Anchor Bay had an appropriately-themed episode of WORLD OF HAMMER, trailers, the occasional commentary track. On LEGEND OF THE 7 GOLDEN VAMPIRES, you got both cuts of the movie and an audio bonus: The story album of the film narrated by Peter Cushing (from the old vinyl release of the Seventies).

It's pointles IMO to releas these non-anamorphic DVDs again in an anamorphic Blu-Ray world. We need a good reason to purchase/re-purchase this stuff. I
wish my PS3 played any region DVD so I could check out the optimum or passworld version.....

How does the Optimum DVD compare with the Warner UK DVD? I managed to pick up the latter used for $12 here in the States, but if the Optimum is significantly
better, I might just have to upgrade.
