Megowan is Dingo's hulking but slow on the uptake brother, Dooley Brion. He corners Scott in the saloon and they have a brutal, over-the-top fistfight. It has always stuck in my mind even from years ago because Megowan was not only much bigger than Scott, but probably about 25 years younger. Of course, Scott wins, an utterly improbable outcome. For some reason this comment made me envision MeGowan as Moose Malloy. He'd 'a been pretty good.

Mar 20 09 2:55 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	CHEYENNE is running on the Westerns Channel right now and there is a great crackerjack mystery-noir episode called "Dead To Rights", with a first rate cast; Megowan, John Russell, Mike Connors, Joanna Barnes, Karl Swensen and Red Barry. Megowan, Russell and Clint Walker make for a pretty tall cast, though Don clearly has the edge. Next to them Mike Connors looks like a wee lad. Dr Paul Armstrong: dont know where you live but I live on the east coast in RI and Encore Westerns just showed that very episode yesterday the 19th on Cox cable! I had been wondering why I didn't find it on last week! Looks like a keeper for me.

Westerns Channel runs the same schedule out here on the west coast, as in the east. Another memorable Megowan oater; the black and white hour-long GUNSMOKE episode "Phoebe Strunk" with Don as one of a clan of backwoods psychopaths, overseen by their chilling "Ma" (Virginia Gregg in the title role). Helping him cut a swath of rape, and some truly cold-blooded murder, his bros include fellow CREATURE WALKS AMONG US star Gregg Palmer and COMBAT's Dick Peabody. For a while, these B&W one-hours were written exclusively by either Kathleen Hite or--in this case--John Meston, and there was some pretty tough stuff.

Mar 22 09 9:34 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Speaking of the Cheyenne TV series, I noticed Don in a number of episodes of the show-musta been hard coming up with guys to face off with big Clint Walker. He was also in a very small role on a later 70s Gunsmoke episode, I think called The River (a 2-parter). That was kinda sad to see 'cuz he should had a much bigger part.

May 13 10 10:48 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Just caught an episode of The Beverly Hillbillies where the gang visits a movie studio Jed has bought, unaware that a monster movie is being shot on the back lot. The monster looks a lot like the Wolf Man (and the movie they're shooting is called The Monster of Yucca Flats --- someone on this show was a B movie fan!). The actor playing the monster is uncredited but I did a quick search and sure enough it was our own Mr. Megowan. He had a real flair for playing monsters, as Tales of Frankenstein and Creature Walks Among Us amply demonstrate.

Poor young lady - died just before her 19th birthday of Hodgkin's Disease. Back to Don Megowan, he did get top billing in CREATION OF THE HUMANOIDS. He also has a good scene in THE DEVIL'S BRIGADE where he's a lumberjack who ends up bested by the judo skills of Jeremy Slate. That in turn ignites a bar brawl that is typical of an Andrew McLaglen film. EDITED TO ADD: I just found the opening credits on YouTube, he's billed as Don Megowan there also. I couldn't pay a great deal of attention but was sorry not to as it seemed a solid family-style Western adventure with all the sensibilities of a good Lone Ranger TV show and deeper production values. John L. Cason was in it, so Megowan had someone to beat on. The horse all but glowed. I wonder if this means TCM will show it from time to time, now.

There's a fascinating interview with Megowan's daughter, terrific family pictures, and some swell sidebars by Ira Behr, Clint Walker and our own Rapfred.
