Last year we had a spirited debate about this show, so I thought I'd revive it. That is if anybody here is still watching it.
I skipped the first couple of the "fake freak show" audition episodes. I just can't take them anymore.
This season has seen a few tweaks, Some are good, some are "meh".
Starting with Hollywood Week (personally my favorite part of the show) they have rightfully expanded it this year. I always found the elimination process at this stage fascinating. Frankly, if the entire season was simply all of them in that closed off theatre (without an audience), just the judges weeding out the weakest links I think the show would be far more entertaining.
I'm not sure what I think of the fourth judge, Kara DioGuardi. I do like her and value her opinion, but having four judges just seems to slow down the momentum of the show. Also, I think Paula was so threatened by her addition that she swore off the "Jesus Juice" and pain killers this season, and lets face it, a less sober and loopy Paula isn't as much fun. She's still an annoying idiot, only now she hasn't any excuse for it.
The process of assembling the final 12 contestants has really been dragged out this season as well. There are still cherry picking that group, and I'm now starting to get impatient with the whole thing. Let's get this show on the road already. One cool thing is that they are bringing back the Wild Card picks this year. That should play out interestingly I think.
As for the singers themselves, there are a few standouts that I think are genuinely talented, but like last year the biggest problem seems to be that they haven't shown much personality as yet. It is still early in the game, and perhaps we will see more of that once the settle in and get more comfortable.
Danny Gokey appears to be the front runner and the judges favorite right now. The only thing that bothers me is that AL has really played up the fact that he lost his wife a little while ago.he lost his wife a little while ago. Llike last years David Cook (and his dying brother) there could be the speculation that he is only advancing because of the sympathy vote. That would be a shame because he is a very likable and a fine performer so far. I think they need to lay off his back story. It was okay to mention it, but pack away the violins please.
Last night there this 16-year old redhead (forgot her name) performed and simply blew me away. She also impressed the judges and is one to watch for sure.
Unfortunately, as a joke (I can't think of any other reason why he got through this far) they allowed Normund Gentle to perform. When you have a guy come out and start dry humping the American Idol logo sign as he sings "I'm not going anywhere" how are you supposed to take the judges serious when they claim this is a singing competition. This clown was chosen over some far better singers. Why?
Anyway, the show is a vast improvement over last year and I'm looking forward to see how it all plays out.
