Jul 22 08 1:53 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I think we should have a permanent "sticky" folder in which we can inform each other of the good deals we sniff out here in order that we all can take advantage of them. So, I'm seeing if I can re-edit the pretty-much dead Blu-ray release sticky topic I created into a DVD & Blu-ray sale folder. Money's tight for most of us so hearing about discounts, BOGOS, MOD coupons and/or exclusives in one permanent place that remains visible seems like a good idea. SAM33 Should be the US, I got them off of HD Digest, only SALO and NOTLD are import. THE FOG, THEY LIVE, ESCAPE FROM NY, GREMLINS, TALE OF TWO SISTERS & PULP FICTION, are headed for import, it's just a matter of figuring out if they will be region-free. The default of sites like Amazon is to list them as belonging to the region they come from, when many are in fact not encoded.

Well, they kinda found out the hard way that MPEG-2 HD masters weren't gonna have the va-va-voom refinement of AVC (MPEG 4) & VC-1, so studios have had to go back in with the new codecs. In that sense they are remastered, or at least re-compressed. Not a Bond fan myself, so I will be sitting these out as well. I'm waiting for the apes, which will also be my first video ownership. I preordered the Universal "Halloween Bundle" of LAND OF THE DEAD, DAWN OF THE DEAD, & THE THING (works out to about $14 a movie), but I find it odd that they didn't have SHAWN OF THE DEAD in that bundle instead of the THE THING??? I'm thinking it will actually be pretty-good (possibly the WEINSTEIN), I've got some pretty-nice Optimum DVDs. That said, I would totally recommend that nobody take the plunge without a review in hand, because as you said, it is NOTLD were talking about here. Perhaps WEINSTEIN will announce their own by then (if they had any good fortune with the DVD). UPDATE - NOTLD BD import described as "George A. From Blu-ray.com, In a four page glossy color ad by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, the Comic-Con International 2008 souvenir book contains a sneak peek of a Ray Harryhausen three film set coming to Blu-ray this October. The "Ray Harryhausen Collection" will contain It Came from Beneath the Sea, as well as Earth vs. the Flying Saucers and the already available 20 Million Miles to Earth in color and black and white, "with new special features!" No further technical specs are known at this time.

I for one am just happy that Criterion has finally gotten around to re-releasing Salo on DVD. I can't speak for the import BD, but the new special edition double-disc set on SD is set to be released on 8/26/08. While this was no where near Pasolini's best work, it is still an important film from an unrivaled cinematic artist. It's a shame the Vatican had to put a hit out on him (wink, wink) especially after he created the most realistic and moving religious statement (from a Christian point of view) ever put on film: The Gospel According to St. Matthew (1964). Also, it just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside that the eBay/Amazon scalpers will finally have to eat their old oop Criterion Salo discs from '98 that they've had the ridiculous nerve to charge upwards of $300-$400 for (and even higher in some cases) over the years. Now if they would just get off their asses and re-release The Killer (1990) I would be the happiest boy on the planet. And let's start seeing those BD's Criterion! Come on already...

I'm just not a gamer. Early reviews are good. SAM33

New Line was something of a subsidiary of Warner, and Warner has recently absorbed them entirely, I'm not even sure if new films will be produced under the "New Line" banner.

Jul 27 08 8:36 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I would love for Criterion to get their butts in gear and start pumping out their entire catalog on BD. I was shocked to find that the regular BD release of The Rock actually contained ALL of the bonus material from the Criterion 2-disc SD version. That was a nice surprise many many months ago. Still, can't wait for the first wave of Criterion BD's to hit. Wages of Fear will be a definite (especially since I never upgraded to the 2-disc SD they released a while back). I'm gettin' all excited just thinking about it now! I almost wish Universal would put out Friedkin's Sorcerer (77) in a respectable version (16x9 would finally be nice) to go along with it. It still pains me to wonder what the film would have been like if Steve McQueen had actually gone through with it and made it instead of the late, great Roy Scheider. I loved Roy (don't get me wrong) but that part in that film was tailor-made for McQueen and he sincerely wanted to do it, but the temperamental movie star clashed with the temperamental director over where the film was going to be shot (Freidkin rightly demanded they film on location in Central or South America) and McQueen actually relented for a bit until he demanded that his wife at the time, Ali MacGraw be made a producer; this was the final insult for Friedkin and he reluctantly said bye-bye to McQueen (which I believe Freidkin has gone on record saying this was probably the biggest career mistake he ever made). Sorcerer would have been THE McQueen movie of the seventies, and being as how McQueen only lived a few more years anyway after '77, it might have even topped his gritty and unforgettable performance in Papillon (73). I guess Freidkin and Universal both paid the price when Sorcerer went up against a tiny sci fi/fantasy film cast with mainly unknowns that went on to change pop culture for all time -- but I'm sure you've never heard of that movie...

So this Halloween's Blu-ray goodies so-far include, CARRIE AMITYVILLE HORROR, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, THE THING, THE OMEN, NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, & possibly NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, not bad really, and all coming from different sources.
