Remember that movie Toys with Robin Williams from the early 90's? I liked aspects of it, and in other respects I thought it was simple-minded. I still
kinda like it though, if for no reason other than another great Joan Cusack performance.
However, I have the strangest problem with exactly one scene in the film - the last shot. At the end, there is a funeral, and at the funeral there is a little statue of an elephant that is placed on the grave. The final shot (which is supposed to be something about the power of sweetness and innocence to overcome all odds, or something like that) involves the statue elephant being pulled upward by a helicopter (from the copter's POV). We never see the helicopter, but we see the grass being indented by the blades whirring, and we see the obvious line attached to the statue. Is this what the director intended the images to be, a helicopter lifting the statue (without showing the copter), or could they not afford to use special effects to make the line holding the elephant disappear? It bothers me because, if it was supposed to be a helicopter lifting the statue, why not show it; or, if it is supposed to be another of the amazing toy creations like the rest of the film, why not just blue screen the effect in?
Does anybody know the story behind this ending sequence?
