That white-haired reverend from '50s movies was just out of his 30s at the time? They got old-looking fast way-back-when! Sorry to hear that he's gone, I always liked him. He was the brother of Donald Woods, who got a lot closer to the tops of castlists than Russ ever did (THE FLORENTINE DAGGER, THE BLACK DOLL, 13 GHOSTS, etc.; he was even Perry Mason in one of the 1930s Warners Perry Masons) and play Jack the Ripper in a THRILLER episode. Feb 3 09 5:10 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	A few months ago, I thought I had spotted Russ in a film i was watching, and ran to see if the title needed to be added to his IMDb credits. It was there already, but on that date he was still alive which pleasantly surprised all heck out of me. With all of his TV appearances in the 50s and 60s, he was one of the first character actors whom I knew on sight. It seemed then that not a week would go by without him appearing on some show.

Feb 4 09 12:15 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm pretty good about keeping mental tabs of actors/actresses still living, but every now and then there's an unexpected obituary of someone I assumed to have died decades ago. Russ Conway is certainly a good example of that, following in the path of Byron Morrow, Herbert Rudley and the like. Each one managed to knock me for a loop. Anyway, I sure miss the presence of folks like Conway and that whole legion of rotating character actors that used to populate the screens, adding a cozy familiarity to so many varied film products.

Feb 8 09 3:17 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	It's nice to see that Russ Conway is not forgotten on the CHFB. I always liked his face, his manner; gentle and reassuring. It seems that he was cheated (or maybe he didn't wanted to regular grind) in not getting a recurring role on a major TV series. He had the face if not name recognition for it. Just about every regular TV viewer of the 50s-60s at the very least knew what Russ Conway looked like. Good call on Conway being Donald Woods' brother, Tom. I knew that, yet I wonder if they were biologically related or if one of them had been adopted. I see no phsyical resemblance whatsoever. Russ started in films a lot later than his brother, never enjoyed near the same level of success,--not that Donald was a superstar but he was a "name" player--while Russ worked as a minor character actor. Bert: good call on Conway being rather like Herbert Rudley (whose career was actually rather like Donald Woods) and, especially Byron Morrow. I honestly didn't think there was anyone else on the planet who knew who Byron Morrow was. We may as well throw Judson Pratt in there while we're at it.

I wonder: was the recurring character "Russ Conway " (played by Kenneth Tobey) on "I Spy" named after Russ Conway the actor? Or was that merely a coincidence?

Feb 8 09 4:39 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	From my childhood in the '50's till my dotage (just last week when I spied him in AN ACT OF MURDER), he was always Fenton Hardy to me. The Disney Hardy Boys inspired me to read the books (the first 40 or so, anyway), and every time Fenton's name popped up, it was Russ Conway's face that I saw. I'm glad he had such a long run. Hope it was a good life.

Just last night I saw an episode of THE UNTOUCHABLES that had both Morrow and Conway in a scene, fellow feds looking for the man behind a theft of currency plates. The mastermind of that theft was Victor Buono.

Aug 6 12 12:24 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I think I saw him on "Highway Patrol" courtesy ThisTV, I dunno. WOW ... Conway lived a long time. 30s during "The Screaming Skull"? Hard to believe. Still, I thought his performance there was earnest and he's certainly memorable. That darned movie scared the H outta me! "Lord I love Spring! The birds, the fair weather, the new flowers. It doesn't get any better than this. HOLY CRAP! what's THAT?!?"
