I do believe he eventually got recognition through "The Ten Commandments" but does anyone know of any other award nods he got in his life time? Thanks!

John Fulton also won the Best Special Effects Oscar for WONDER MAN (released in 1945). Danny Kaye played twins in this film and one is a ghost. I don't recall seeing this released on DVD though there was a laser disc many years ago. The optical effects are outstanding and were mostly accomplished with some very clever split screen work. It's a very funny film and I place it up there with THE COURT JESTER as my two favorite Danny Kaye movies. Worth tracking down if you get the chance. The imdb.com also lists Fulton as nominated for THE INVISIBLE MAN RETURNS, THE INVISIBLE AGENT, THE INVISIBLE WOMAN and THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE. Does anyone know if John P. Jan 13 09 10:36 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	John Fulton wasn't often uncredited; I guess he was sufficiently important at Universal that he got credit on nearly all his pics. From my interview with his daughter Joanne: << Dad's being nominated for TULSA created an intra-family problem, because the special effects guys who had done MIGHTY JOE YOUNG, including Grandpa [matte painter Fitch Fulton], were up for an Oscar also. MIGHTY JOE YOUNG was I believe the only movie with my grandfather's name listed in the screen credits and the two pictures were up against each other, MIGHTY JOE YOUNG vs. Tulsa, father vs. son. Not good! Apparently RKO loaded on the publicity for MIGHTY JOE YOUNG--in those days, publicity did have some effect. RKO went hog wild publicizing it and making sure Academy members went to see it and all that business, whereas [Eagle-Lion] didn't do much with TULSA in terms of the Academy Awards. MIGHTY JOE YOUNG won and Dad didn't. Not a good event in the Fulton family! There was a little bit of a "family thing" over that, but it didn't last long. Well, Dad felt--and I think rightly so--that the trick work in TULSA was much better than in MIGHTY JOE YOUNG. It was so strange: In 1946 Dad couldn't be bothered to go to the Oscars, he just wasn't interested, but then in 1950 he was put-out about his own father winning. To put it mildly, Dad was an extremely complicated person--I think every man and woman who ever worked with him would tell you that. <

I never saw TULSA and didn't realize that the Fultons both had films nominated in the same year so now I must try to find a copy of that movie. I think I saw somewhere else on this board that you wrote an article on John Fulton but I forgot to make a note of the magazine, could you remind me of the issue I should be looking for? Besides MIGHTY JOE YOUNG it seems that Fitch Fulton worked on GONE WITH THE WIND and CITIZEN KANE which is an impressive if rather short list. Any idea of further unlisted credits for the man? thanks, Jim Aupperle

An article that might be of even greater interest to you is MAKING MIRACLES THE HARD WAY: JOHN P. FULTON, ASC which ran in the December 1983 AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHER. When these guys die (relatively) young, I often find myself ass-u-me-ing that they COULDN'T have lived into our lifetimes ... but they sure could have. tom "In the next MONSTER TIMES ... Maybe Fulton thought that the best effects were the most realistic? In that case TULSA would outshine JOE. There's one heckuva oil well field fire. But it's a set piece whereas JOE is an efx showcase.

May 28 10 7:36 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Some of the burning oil derrick shots from TULSA show up as color stock shots in WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE. Fulton's daughter may have thought that MIGHT JOE YOUNG was just another gorilla suit movie, inferior to her father's Technicolor effects in TULSA (not to mention family loyalty). Similarly, actress Faith Domergue thought that Harryhausen's visual effects in IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA were inferior to those in the bigger-budgeted Technicolor production THIS ISLAND EARTH.
