Well, there are a couple of pieces to that story. While we had a license to relaunch it online, during the second half of our term we also were contracted by the Fangoria guys on a project, and their president at the time was also going after Famous Monsters (!). When I told him that I was looking to develop TMT as a kid-friendly horror site, he said that's where he wanted to go with FM and we held off until we knew what was going on with him and the FM rights (and as we all know, there are too many people claiming the rights to that one) out of respect. This put the TMT site on hold for over a year before the Fango guys discovered what most of us already knew about the FM rights.

That license expired a few months ago and unfortunately that's where it gets darker. In conversation this time around with the two guys who owned it, they told me that they also produced most of the run of Screw magazine in the '70s. For those who recall the noise that magazine made at the time, it was far from family-friendly. I had some serious concerns about launching a kid-oriented project with that brand in the likely event someone would discover their connection to that publication, so while I was negotiating the renewal, I was in the process of getting some advice on whether or not to go through with it. During that time, apparently, the current owners of Fangoria (who for the sake of full disclosure I had a nasty divorce with back in October), who were well aware that we were dancing with Les and Larry, must have swept in with some better deal or something. I certainly wasn't offering any money on the deal.

So as far as I'm concerned, that's fate taking a hand and making up my mind for me. I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't really pissed off about how it was handled...I didn't find out about it until I was contacted by one of our boardies, never hearing from Les or Larry themselves.
