America calls on its greatest superhero, The Yellow Jacket (a Rocketman-like figure who can control yellow jacket insects and flies with mechanical wings), to defeat the Dragonfly, Japanese Superagent for the Axis, who has made an unholy alliance with the sinister Monarch Of The Moon. The Monarch's secret intent is to invade Earth and strip it of all its natural resources. America's greatest hero is the only thing that stands between the Monarch and his treacherous goal.
That's the plot synopsis for the 2005 Dark Horse/ Image co-production, released last Tuesday. The film is an entertaining homage to serials with a lighter touch (and less of a budget) than the similar SKY CAPTAIN. Shot for only $75,000, on minimalist sets and with a lot of "greenscreen" work, this film succeeded in entertaining me more than the aforementioned SKY CAPTAIN. The disc contains both color (reminiscent of the Cinecolor found in INVADER'S FROM MARS) and Black & White versions, along with an entertaining commentary from director Richard Lowry and screenwriter, Chris Patton. I say entertaining, because they encountered many of the same problems that the original serial productions faced, because of their small budget.
I took a chance on this, at my local video store and was pleasantly surprised. Has anyone else seen or heard of this film?
