Dec 3 08 9:11 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Rogue, you're absolutely right about what if you get stuck in extreme weather and needing a phone. I lived in rural Minnesota (an hour from Sioux Falls) and got stuck in a snowdrift once. Fortunately, a total stranger got me out. I've worn a watch for at least 40 years. When I worked in radio, I had to have one to time my broadcasts and reports. Plus, over the course of a lifetime, I've liked knowing what the time is/was for things like how much longer the flight is, or for picking someone up or meeting them, when something opens/closes/starts/is ready, my race time, how much time I have to get to work, that kind of thing. One of my pet peeves is people who can't be on time. And, if there isn't a clock in view, I needn't ask someone else what time it is.

Dec 3 08 10:21 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Public phones have just about disappeared. If you find one, it's probably broken. I've been carrying a cell phone for several years now. It's just that no one else would notice, as it almost never rings. My wife might call me twice a month when I'm not at my desk and she wants to tell me something, but that's about it. I call her on it about as frequently, only due to some change of plans. Go without a wristwatch? Good grief, if I forget mine, I'd best turn around and get it, else I'd be looking at my bare wrist every ten minutes. Long ago, I bought one of the early digital watches, with the red LED display. You had to press a button to get it to light uip and show the time. I had to replace the batteries again and again. The guy at the store tells me "if you light it up more that three or four times a day, it'll eat the batteries. How often do you light it?" "Maybe 20 times an hour . . . when I'm teaching a class. You have to pace these things." I welcomed the LCD digitals, but went back to an analog type because they just looked better, and I didn't need to know the exact minute any more.

Dec 3 08 10:39 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	My wife and I each have one. It's a great (for us) Verizon plan - pre-pay $15 a month (must pay for 2 months at a time). I never use mine and the hours and dollars keep rolling over. Think I have about 60 hours of unused time on mine. Frankly, I never call anyone! I would kill myself if I had a job that required me to live by the phone. Gil

When I lived in Redfield, SD, I got down to Sioux Falls 5 or 6 times a year. It isn't wrong to have a cell phone, duh-- it's just that most of what passes for conversation on the little buggers isn't worth really saying. Then again, I'm an old crank without many friends ... so I don't have much to say anywho... There's usually a bit of brass on the watch, usually on the winding stem, and that seems to interact badly with my skin chemistry--I get bloody sores where the brass touches my skin. I tried a LCD watch some years back. To my surprise, the little bars that made up the letters slowly disappeared, one by one, leaving me with a blank gray-green window with a blinking colon. I took the watch back to the store. The clerk was stunned, said the watches simply didn't fail in that mode--but couldn't deny that that one had. He assured me this wouldn't happen again, and gave me a replacement. It happened again. Another replacement. Again. I gave up. For some time, I had a watch with a face design I liked very much--Unca Scrooge pointing at bags of money. When that one broke, I gave up on watches until a friend gave me a pocket watch a few Xmases ago. That's lasted a few years now. But still no cell phone. However, I am not going to claim NEVER a cell phone. The conversations I accidentally overhear usually go something like "I'm at the theater now. Where are you? Okay, see you soon." Or "Oh, not much, how about you?" Or "I'll see you later." etc.

She leaves it at work, leaves it at home when she goes to work, leaves it in the car, leaves it in the bathroom. It's HER phone and she's supposed to have it with HER. I work at home on the computer and keep track of my time online. The other day I heard the dang cell phone ringing downstairs. It took me so long to find it, the caller had hung up. Later it rang again. Wrong number. My concentration on my work went out the window. Earlier this evening, she couldn't find the cell phone. So she called the number on our other phone. The chair in the bedroom, piled with clothing, began to ring. She found the cell phone down in the crack of the chair where it had fallen from her pants pocket. See what I mean? Because even while we're now living on the PLANET OF THE CELL PHONES, there may come a time where you've forgotten your phone, or it's dead or broken, and you need a pay phone for some reason. All well and good -- but how does that keep me from hearing people (strangers, too) blabbering all over the place on their annoying phones when I don't want to be burdened by hearing them? Do you think I have any control over how cell phones are affecting me and the rest of the world? The fool who is driving his car with one hand on the wheel and not paying attention to what he's doing ... if he hits me or injures me for life, what then? How far would the post-wagging of a finger and a good scolding go then?

Dec 4 08 11:32 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I need a cell phone, to use literally about 6 minutes a month, but I'm terrible with technology (the Internet took me forever), and no one will give me any grounding in cell phones for more than a few minutes at a time, very far apart. Which is funny, since I know a lot of people who cannot keep away from them, and the usual image of fanatics is that they want to win converts and create MORE fanatics. Evidently with cell phones, it isn't so, at least in my case. To me, they're one more dent in the whole "Men from Mars, Women from Venus" type of thinking. Because they show that men can lose every bit of sense they have when using a phone just as well as women. Just as the whole car / truck / SUV mentality - I don't mean the "love" of vehicles, I mean the truly obnoxious side of it - gets bigger every day for women as well as men. Both things are equal opportunity, as it turns out.

Yeah, my wife got those radio phones when she started working and the kids were at school. If I foresee a need to carry it because I need to pick up the kids from someone's house, or if someone else picks 'em up and I need to bring 'em home. Otherwise I don't bother. I work at the office and if someone wants to find me they know where they can do so. I also do not wear a watch or jewelry. If I forget my wallet, I'm probably fine. Dec 4 08 1:14 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm definitely a holdout. Cell phones are a good invention, seem to have had a bad effect on human behavior. I live in a city, and the constant use of cells in trains and buses and transportation terminals has destroyed much of the pleasure of riding around the city and suburbs since it's nearly impossible not to be within literal earshot of someone chattering away on one wherever you go. They're banned in public libraries, yet people go off in the stacks and talk on them anyway. The librarians do their best to enforce the rules, aren't always around. For all this, I don't hate the phones themselves but rather the way they're used and abused. I was coming home last week on a twenty to thirty minute bus ride, at rush hour, pretty crowded, and spent most of the trip standing next to a woman on a cell who talked non-stop for the entire trip, making me privvy to the water cooler gossip about her place of employment, what she was going to buy at the grocery on her way home, the quality of her relationships with her co-workers and a host of other issues, none of which interested me in the least. She probably spoke more actual words on that one bus ride than I speak in an entire week! It seems that cells have created a new kind of communication,--maybe the wrong word there--that's near content free; it's just carrying on for the sake of carrying on, talking to just talk (do cell users ever listen?). In this sense it's rather cheapened human interaction, making it almost too easy for people to be in touch. Me, I don't want people to know where I am every second of the day, to hear about my comings and my goings. That's my business. Also, I really enjoy the view outside the windows of buses and trains, and like "people watching", the old, the young, the big, the little; it's part of the fun of public transportation, unique to that experience, and cell phones have largely killed the quality of life on public vehicles, making it difficult to focus on just being in the world, looking around, having one's own thoughts in one's head.

Dec 4 08 2:18 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	In this country it's very common to make fun of either famous people or daytime talk show guests for the same thing, and that's "parading" their personal lives in front of everyone else. But as Telegonus says, countless other people find their own modest way of letting you in on stuff about themselves that at least approaches that, by making sure their cell phone calls are within earshot. So that's more reason those comments about "shameless" celebrities and "trailer trash" talk show guests are pretty meaningless to me, because a million people who aren't in EITHER category find THEIR way of letting me in on their personal lives.
