Now let's see, there was: They Saved Hitler's Brain. They Saved Hitler's Balls (aka Boys from Brazil). What part of him did they save on the moon?

Dec 1 08 8:05 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	There are Nazis on the Moon in Heinlein's first juvenile novel, ROCKETSHIP GALILEO (1947), vaguely the basis of DESTINATION MOON. I started watching the trailer then gave up in annoyance when a title announced this is taking place on "the dark side of the Moon." The Moon doesn't HAVE a dark side. One side always faces the Earth, the other away from Earth, but both receive equal amounts of sunlight.

Dec 2 08 9:47 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The "dark side of the moon" is a common phrase to indicate the hidden side of the moon, and I think it's pretty obvious they meant that as well as to indicate "the dark side" of humanity. Likewise when people say they'd go "to the ends of the earth" they aren't saying the earth is flat. It's just an expression (although relatively speaking, the earth does appear flat).

Do you know how many times I've had an idea and either thought I'd get around to it later or decided it wouldn't fly, only to see something almost identical to my concept show up a few months down the road? (Seen it happen both in print and on screen.) There are Nazis on the Moon in Heinlein's first juvenile novel, ROCKETSHIP GALILEO (1947) Funny you mention that title, Bill; I just picked up FOUR FRONTIERS, which gathers Heinlein's Rocket Ship Galileo, Space Cadet, Red Planet (first Heinlein book I ever read, way back in grade school) and Farmer in the Sky in a single volume. (A number of Heinlein's juvenilles have been collected in omnibuses. OUTWARD BOUND has Have Spacesuit-Will Travel, Starship Troopers and Podkayne of Mars, INFINITE POSSIBILITIES has Tunnel in the Sky, Time for the Stars and Citizen of the Galaxy, while TO THE STARS contains Between the Planets, The Rolling Stones, Starman Jones and The Star Beast. Another anthology of interest to Heinlein fans is OFF THE MAIN SEQUENCE, which collects 27 of his short stories from the pulps, sometimes written under pseudonyms.) Well, to be fair, they're not the first (and probably not the last) to use that phrase and, given the nature of the spoof, it probably just "sounded right." They were looking for extras and people to help out on set... apparently it has a big collab vibe. I wish I'd known about it - I may have got to meet Udo Kier. Dang. It had been so long since I'd heard any more on this, I was afraid the project had been put on the shelf of "things that might have been." Glad to find it's still moving forward. It's the kind of high concept thing that could've put Sky Captain over Mark, when I did my article on Hollywood's long history of trying to put the John Carter of Mars tales onscreen, I talked to one of the staff at Paramount who had been working on the Mars saga when it was at that studio. (By a strange twist of fate, he's now involved with the Disney/Pixar version.) While we were talking, the subject of SKY CAPTAIN came up. If I'm remembering the conversation correctly (it's been a couple of years so the gray cells could be off), there had been some debate at Paramount about releasing SKY CAPTAIN a couple of months later than they did (November or December, rather than September) and possibly attracting a larger audience over the holidays.

I'm actually going to apply to be an extra. It seems they were delayed. Only a small chance I'll get in, but I figure I have as much chance as anybody else... It sounds like the sort of project that might easily have been shelved due to lack of interest.
