The Devil Bat is from the same studio and is full to the brim with exciting hijinks - albiet low budget ones - and Strangler has some wonderful direction that makes the most of its supernatural elements, but a screenplay that is only sporadically related to them "a screenplay that is only sporadically related to them" The screenplay is almost entirely about the Strangler. Yes, he only puts in brief appearances, but to say the movie is not about the supernatural Strangler is on par with saying Horror of Dracula is not about Dracula because of Christopher Lee's relatively brief appearances, and Curse of the Demon has no supernatural elements because the Demon is only briefly in view. Dec 8 08 11:12 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I notice that the "snoozer" or "boring" argument is being used against STRANGLER OF THE SWAMP. I have no doubt that it is boring for some people. They tell us so. It doesn't make it boring for me. Here are quotes from the first several reviews if you press the hate buttom on IMDB on a well-known film on these boards: 1. "This movie sucks big time. The movie is too long nothing happens the whole film." 2. "This movie was unbearably boring to sit through." 3. "Stay away from this boring travesty of a movie." 4. "Wake me up when this film gets interesting." 5. "I've seen some terrible movies in my time but this one really takes the prize as one of the worst." 6. "This movie is absolutely boring." What loser are they writing about? STRANGLER OF THE SWAMP? THE MAD MONSTER? THE APE MAN? PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE? A bottom of the barrel PRC or Monogram stinker. No. These lines were taken from reviews of JAWS. Any movie at all seems to turn off about 5% to 10% of the viewers, regardless, for one reason or another. I don't doubt the movie actually bored them, but that reaction is of little value to those who liked and responded to JAWS. Dec 11 08 10:24 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	STRANGLER's certainly watchable, with some nice stand-out scenes with Middleton, and a few above average shot compositions. But ,with these exceptions (in my view), it's no more than an average PRC film.

It seems to me that there are a lot of non-objective viewers of many of these films. STRANGLER OF THE SWAMP is not to everyone's taste-- I wouldn't recommend it to anyone without first knowing how interested they were in swamp gothic atmospheres and stagey Lewtonian dark fantasy story-telling (STRANGLER OF THE SWAMP, I think, has an ambiance very similar to ISLAND OF THE DEAD [1945]). But at the risk of sounding like a professional defender of Franz Bentick Wysbar pictures, I feel that-- like THE DEVIL BAT'S DAUGHTER --this movie gets beaten up a little more than it should. So time between action takes on substance for me, even when the screen is 100% ghost free. It's either ghost, or waiting for ghost. STRANGLER is certainly one of my favorite Poverty pieces. I guess one man's ZZZZ is another man's BRRR.

One thing I did notice-- one of the shots near the end is clearly not Middleton, but a double, and even stranger, they forgot to do the foggy optical effect over him, making it even more obvious it's not Middleton. Feb 10 09 2:34 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	When I was a kid livining in Chicago, and we didn't yet own a TV set, and I spent many an afternoon at a neighbor's house where they had a set, a local station ran STRANGLER OF THE SWAMP as an afternoon movie on the average of once every two weeks -- for many a month. And, seeing it at that age (I was around five or six), even in the daytime, and once every couple weeks, was a pretty scary experience. I still have a fondness for this movie.

May 26 09 12:06 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Despite Tom's mixed-negative review in POVERTY ROW HORRORS, I liked this a lot for its style and, in a real rarity for a Poverty Row horror, giving us intriguing characters who we genuinely get involved with. In defense of Frank Wisbar (and mind you, I haven't seen DEVIL BAT'S DAUGHTER), the German film tradition he came out of didn't put much a premium on realism, but rather on the artistic depiction of evocative imagery. As with THE MAN FROM PLANET X, I can forgive the fact that the sets are obviously stagebound by the fact that the director wasn't aiming for realism but, for visual atmosphere. The direction doesn't always work, but hits the mark enough times for me to recommend it.

I guess one man's ZZZZ is another man's BRRR. I'm with you, Dr. Armstrong. I saw STRANGLER FROM THE SWAMP for the very first time just recently. About ten minutes into the film, after already being luxuriously saturated in its wondrously misty atmosphere, I thought to the movie, "Where have you been all my life?" I didn't consider it tedious or boring in the least, but rather an effectively creepy little ghost story. I'm looking forward to seeing it again. Martin
