Pinball Wizards: Were You One? |

I came of game-playing age a bit after the popular reign of the pinball arcade. I am pretty familiar with the advent of the video game arcade and many of the
historic games, and in the early days I'd play video games in places like Tennessee and there would be an equal number of pinball games in the back, with
the video games up front. But I don't really know what it was like during the heyday of the pinball game; was it ever as popular as the Who's Pinball
Wizard song made it appear to be? Did anybody here spend long hours in the pinball arcade, gaining a rep as a competent player? And is there any legendary
pinball games you remember?

I absolutely loved pinball, and remember back when I'd stop off on my way home from work to play for an hour or so every day. I also wasted several hours
of my life in my favorite bar as a teenager playing on one of those old pre-electronic games. I don't recall any specific titles, though. The newer ones
were often based on movies. Video games were great fun and addictive as well when they began to appear, but pinball had a real, hands-on quality that video
games lacked.
Legend, oh legend, the third wheel legend...always in the way.

I used to make some good money playing pinball in the late sixties/early seventies. It was a lot of fun!

I was pretty good. The older pinball machines were better than today's, IMO.

I was 8 in 1978 so Galaxian was my video game of choice. The arcade had 2 or 3 pinball machines in the back. When the fair came to town. they'd have a few
of the older style pinball amchines. I'd have a go but was never any good. I mean, how do you stop the ball going straight down the middle? How can you
stop that??

I used to be a pretty good at pinball. Maybe not a wizard, but pretty good.
The game nobody could touch me at was Defender. I could play for hours on one quarter back in the day. Cromwell |

I've never played it much, but I always enjoyed it. This thread makes me wonder, though - is there a place for "Tommy" in the " ' 60s
and ' 70s" thread? After all, it's an extremely weird film.

Oh, I'd definitely say the pinball games of the early 90's rocked! I became quite adept at playing The Addams Family game (awesome!), Twilight Zone,
Gilligan's Island, Terminator II, and Funhouse. Also loved the Star Wars game, Dracula (based on the Coppolla film), Star Trek: the Next Generation, and
The Simpsons. Out of all of them, The Addams Family and Gilligan's Island were my favorites because you had to "build" on the prize, and when you
reached that high point, it was crazy!
I started playing pinball in the late 70's, early 90's, and I think Galaxian was one of them. Is that the game that, when you put in a quarter, the machine moaned? Rod |

Once upon a time, I won a Bally Star Trek: The Motion Picture pinball machine from Starlog Magazine in an art contest.
I can't say I was a pinball wizard, but I got pretty good.

I loved playing pinball! Unfortunately, I was pretty bad at it. I did have a little more luck with the video-style games, though.

One of the jobs I had in college was working in an arcade. You couldn't help but pick up some pinball skills in that situation. One of the tricks of the
trade is to catch the ball on an upturned flipper, lighten your finger's pressure on the flipper and let the ball slowly roll until it's in position,
then aim it at a big score target. Another is to stand back from the machine so that when you shake it you don't tilt it nearly as often. Even if you
don't have the quickest reflexes, these things can help you rack up a pretty good score.

I own a Gauntlet arcade game and a 1976 Wizard pinball game. Unfortunately the Wizard is in storage and needs work before it will play correctly.
One of my goals is to have a a small number of such games in my home, mostly for the novelty value. ![]()

One of my biggest fantasies used to be to have my own pinball game at home.

Yup. I loved 'em. Bally, Gottlieb. Brings back memories. Once upon a time every neighborhood bar had one, or so it seemed. They were everywhere. I
haven't even seen one in ages, more than ten years. After a certain point they began to get less fun, too techy for my tastes. The best ones were in the
70's, though I'd always take pinball over any other kind of bar game. The video stuff never interested me. Thanks for the memories.

Remember how satisfying that loud pop was when you won a game, and the multiple pops when you won a bunch of 'em? Great fun.

I suppose this shows my age, but I was always better at console games than arcade games. (Read: I suck at arcade games.) I think most of that stems from the
fact that NYC doesn't really have a plethora of arcades, and I've only played arcade games since going to college.
