Jan 24 09 9:42 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hey Reeqs Thanks for the reminder about the shrimp roll.I can remember sitting in my car with a date at rhe Super 29 Drive In and the anintermission add came up where they had one of thses rolls on top of a Wheel Of Fortune type game wheels which was inverted. I got one for my date and myself and it squirted out the end when I bit into it. Ahh Memories. Cadmandd

It was the Somerville Drive-In and around 20 years ago the a-holes turned it into a mini-golf\driving range and pro-shop. As respect to the drive in, they left the train tracks and the train itself is in the old corrugated metal hut they parked it in, and they made it the center piece of one of the mini-golf holes. I started going there in 1970 when I was 5 and God only knows how many movies I saw there, including Night Of The Living Dead when I was 10 or 11, and Irwin Allens's disaster movies to name a few. The last two movies I saw there were in 1986, a double bill of "Day of The Dead" and "Friday The 13th Part 3-The Final Chapter." And those great big overpriced sodas that were more ice than soda, and the hotdogs in the silver mylar wrappers (burnt dry from the heat lamps) and the burgers and the greasy popcorn. Yeah, it was all good.

Jan 3 10 5:53 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	My certain memory of drive-ins kicks in at about 1964 and a second-run showing of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. In terms of horror genre, my earlest drive-in memory is of a showing of 'Frankenstein 1970' (which I pestered my parents into attending) and goes through Revenge of Frankenstein, The Haunted, Berserk, The Psychopath, Beneath the Planet of the Apes, and as an adult, Scanners, Dead and Buried, Alien, and finally Jurassic Park, the last genre film I saw at the drive-in. Revenge of Frankenstein was shown at a drive-in that was a long drive to the middle of nowhere, the woods in southern Indiana (The Lakewood), that enhanced the eeriness multifold. Berserk and The Psychopath were on a bill together at another really creepy secluded drive-in, a location also perfect for this sort of film (The Valley). We went to the drive-in just about every other weekend during warm months, which might equal as many as 60 visits between 1964 and 1968 (the year we got a color TV and drive-in virtually never after), so it bugs me how much the rest of what I saw at the drive-in blends together now. Beyond the above, I remember some real stinkers like the dubbed Italian Man in the Iron Mask and A Man Called Dagger ("starring Jan Murray!"), but nothing worth talking about.

Jan 3 10 7:47 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	My parents took me and my siblings to the drive-in many times in the late 1950s and early 1960s. I was 7 years old in 1959. NORTH BY NORTHWEST, JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, THE COMANCHEROS, EXPERIMENT IN TERROR, SAIL A CROOKED SHIP, OPERATION MAD BALL, WAKE ME WHEN IT'S OVER (my dad was a big Ernie Kovacs fan -- it rubbed off on me), JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG and THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD are some of the film I remember seeing from 1959 to 1965 with one or both parents. There must have been others. When I was old enough to drive I would see many movies which had moved from first run, to suburban runs then to the drive-in. With the double-bill system the drive-in was a great place for catching movies that you missed that had come out several years earlier. Also, some movies seemed to stay on the drive-in circuit forever which gave you the chance to see a favorite movie over and over. Movies like FANTASTIC VOYAGE, RIO CONCHOS and THE SCALPHUNTERS never seemed to disappear for too long before reappearing as the bottom half of a double bill. Ozoners were also great for running movies no hardtop, first run theater would lower themselves to play. That's where many of the goriest, sleaziest, and obscure horror, sci-fi and action movies played. Of course, these movies played indoors in the biggest cities, but out here in the Fort Worth/Dallas area, where drive-ins became almost as plentiful as the statel flower, the genre material tended to play outdoors. It was at drive-ins that I first saw NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. At one point an important precedent was set when a first run, major studio offering, M.A.S.H. was booked for its initial run at the Fort Worth Twin Drive-in. A big Hollywood movie like this had never opened outdoors. After that, we saw it happen more frequently. Marathons were popular like "Spend a Night with Clint Eastwood," or all-nighters of Bruce Lee or PLANET OF THE APES movies. The last time I went to the drive-in was to see a double-bill of AUSTIN POWERS and THE FIFTH ELEMENT.

Whoa, Monstroso, The Lakewood was my "home town" drive-in. I saw lots of movies at lots of drive-ins, but more at The Lakewood than anywhere else. I was back home just recently and got to drive by the spot where that drive-in used to be. Sort of a big lot with what looks like abandoned machinery on one side, and some houses on the other.

Jan 4 10 8:17 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The first movie I ever went out to see at a theater was VALLEY OF GWANGI at the Twilite Gardens drive-in in Oklahoma City. I went with my whole family and a big ice chest full of soda pop (which became our usual habit for such outings). I later saw LATITUDE ZERO for the first time at that same drive-in. My memory is also a bit ridiculous, as I can recall almost every movie I saw at the theater and where. But then again, it's kind of easy: Quail Plaza was the first indoor theater I ever went to (I remember thinking that drive-ins were "real" movie theaters and this indoor thing was lame), where my brother and I saw THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH and Disney's PETER PAN . I later watched a double feature of COUNT YORGA, VAMPIRE and DESTROY ALL MONSTERS at the Quail Plaza. The last thing I saw there was a triple-feature of WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS, HERCULES, and HERCULES UNCHAINED in 1980. I had already seen all 3 movies on TV, but this all-day matinee special was $1 for 3 movies and a free hotdog and drink! The Lakeside always showed Disney movies. North Park was in a snooty upscale fashion mall, but they always showed the big block-busters (JAWS, STAR WARS, STAR TREK-TMP). The Mini-Mall always showed sci-fi/monster movies on Saturday afternoons (mostly 60's Toho monsters). It closed down and reopened several times. FORBIDDEN PLANET or DESTROY ALL MONSTERS was always the last thing they showed before going out of business again. But the last time the Mini Mall Theater went under, the newest owner remodeled it into a trendy restaurant rather than try to rerevive it. The restaurant tanked, too. Edmond Plaza and MacArthur Park were where I usually went during my high school years. I got to see a lot of 70's sci-fi B movies and all the Harryhausen Sinbad movies at those theaters.

Maybe it was our angle of entry, from the suburbs south of Louisville, but was that drive-in really as out of the way as it seemed to someone unfamiliar with the area, approaching there at dusk? Jan 4 10 10:51 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Monstroso, I can imagine The Lakewood seeming really out in the boonies to someone unfamliar with the area, but for the locals, it seemed pretty handy. There were (new) subdivisions in the area when I started going there, and at either end of that stretch of road were two Junior High Schools. It was a route that many Jeffersonvillians regularly took to get to points west. But, yes, it was sort of 'out in the woods'. Nice atmosphere for watching the monstahs. It was more lonely and hidden than any of the Louisville drive-ins (and I hit them all at one time or another), but the really out-there area drive-in was the Charlestown. I saw NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD there, and the long, headlights-are-the-only-illumination drive home was harrowing.

That sounds absolutely awesome (although I know it wasn't exactly that at the time). I remember The Charlestown as the name of the drive-in, and of course know the area (I live in southern Indiana myself now). I'll have to do some asking as to what we may have seen there back in the day. I grew up on the Louisville side, and my family's main drive-ins were The Kenwood and The Preston. But as you say, we hit them all at one time or another. (The Clarksville isn't far from me here, and it is now an open field. I pass there every couple of days and imagine what it must have been like for the people who lived directly across the highway facing the screen. If they were inclined, they probably could sit on their front porch summer nights and get a free show.) The Georgetown keeps hanging in there. I hope it does for a long while. Cheers! I can't remember the second feature, but I know I'd already seen it and didn't want to see it again (plus, I was tired) so I took along an alarm clock, went to sleep in the car during the second feature, and the alarm woke me up in time for GHIDRAH, THE THREE-HEADED MONSTER. That stunt alone qualifies me as a true Monster Kid. And an idiot. By the way, far as I'm concerned, The Clarksville's main claim to fame was that it had the best hot dogs of any Kentuckiana drive-in.

We'd get our PJ's and blankets and fall asleep in the back seat, get popcorn and pizza for dinner, play in the crappy playground under the screen before the movie started. I saw 7 Face of Dr Lao, King Kong Escapes, and many grown up movies not worth remembering. Then later, with my teenage hoodlum friends we discovered the thrill of sneaking in via the trunk or back seat. Must have seen 50 or so Kung Fu movies that way. All those Drive Ins are gone. The Van Nuys, the Victory, the Sepulveda, the Winnetka, the San Val. I also miss the old snack bar films...terrible but I'd like to see them once more.
