Growing up in the Tri-State region during the late 1970's and 80's at Thanksgiving was always special for my brother and I and our many cousins. WOR-TV, Channel 9, was a local New York station that would always broadcast a King Kong monster movie marathon on Thanksgiving Day and a Godzilla monster movie marathon the day after Thanksgiving (complete with Crazy Eddie commercials)! Since this was the pre VHS and DVD era, this seemed the only time we could watch 2 days of back to back monster movies and a Thanksgiving tradition was born that aired annually for more than a decade. For me, monster movies always remind me of the Thanksgiving holiday the same way the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade reminds others of Turkey Day.
Channel 9 no longer broadcasts these Thanksgiving Monster Movie Marathons on TV, but the tradition does continue today at my home with my children and my wife. Our new monster movie tradition is to always watch "The Giant Claw" after the parade as this movie is one of the biggest turkeys of the 1950's, but also our favorite and seems appropriate to watch on Thanksgiving Day.
Since we're about a week away from Thanksgiving, I'd love to hear if you and your family have a viewing tradition of monster movies or any genre movies for your Thanksgiving Day!
