Robinson stars as a rancher who is harboring a secret obsession about an abandoned house in the woods near his property. This is a very effective and atmospheric thriller that I first saw twenty-something years ago late night on PBS. I highly recommend it.

Sep 24 05 6:29 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	One of those films that nobody seems to have heard of - I think because it straddles quite a few genres from lush literary romanticism to drak drama to horror. It is a bit like Dragonwyk in that respect. Robinson is very good in this film, as he was in virtually everything.

Oct 30 05 11:33 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	THE RED HOUSE is a worthy film. Its a prime example of American Gothic. PSYCHO is the only other film I can think when the house is almost a charcter itself that defines the charcters around it.

Sadly, though, Eddie's granddaughter Francesca told me that Eddie, though I believe he co-produced the film, thought very little of it. But Hu Phan, I agree 100%: Eddie was GREAT in everything. Although misplaced in period, he was one of the best things about "The Ten Commandments". Always entertaining, even if absurdly so.

Mar 29 12 6:00 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Mora, Eddie G is my favorite actor. I have a lot of actors I love, but Eddie G is my fave. Just an incredible presence in anything he's ever been in. As for this film, I have a pretty ragged copy on a PD box set. I wonder how cleaned up the BR release will be? Love the film itself though, really a masterpiece in it's way.

Apr 2 12 10:42 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I think Eddie was entering a period where he was becoming disenchanted with his career, hence his negative feelings about both "The Red House" and another film that, for me at least, leaves an uncomfortable chill: "Scarlet Street". Those final scenes with the voices and his creeping madness are just downright eerie.

It may have just been the alternate connotation of the title and Robinson's distress at the pressure of HUAC that had him thinking negatively toward the film. His autobiography reprints a letter or two that he received during this period and one can only imagine how many more of them he received at the time.

Apr 2 12 2:36 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Let's not forget that Edward G. had also been in THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW and NIGHT HAS A THOUSAND EYES recently. The mid-to-late forties saw him in his gloomiest films (until SOYLENT GREEN, at least) and all that gloom and doom may have stuck with him when he left the set.

It was made in 3D also, so I'm surprised that it hasn't showed up at the Film Forum in NYC.

That's interesting , I can imagine him in that role very easy , Bogart was a great actor also but Robinson could play meek or tough . The man had amazing presence even in things like his cameo at the window in the Batman series , he brings a dignity to the role . It's a crying shame that so many of today's young film fan's know so little of the man. Back in the 70's here in England he's film's were often shown on night time TV , even obscure stuff like "The Hatchet Man".

I think Bogart and Cagney had enough range and talent to take on pretty much any role they cared to, but tended to be cast as characters which played to their strengths. Raft, on the other hand, was very limited and one-note.
