And the supporting casts are often fairly large for such modestly budgeted features, and top notch--Marc Lawrence, Douglas Fowley, Robert Barrat, Douglass Dumbrille, Cesar Romero, Louis Jean Heydt, Ricardo Cortez, C. Henry Gordon, Lionel Atwill, Leo G. Carroll, Ethel Griffies, Milton Parsons, Cora Witherspoon, Victor Jory--remarkable when you think about it. I love Treasure Island, too, but Dead Men Tell is right up there in my book; and Murder Cruise is loads of fun and a good mystery.

Feb 12 10 5:21 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I picked up the 18 film box set from Costco a little while ago, thinking I was getting a repackaging of the separate boxed sets. This is true, but up to a point. Each of the discs is single-sided, but one of them says to flip it over to get the other film, which would have been BEHIND THAT CURTAIN. However, the film is nowhere to be found. Also, the set cuts off partway through the what the fifth boxed set contains at MURDER OVER NEW YORK, and omitting DEAD MEN TELL, IN RENO, IN PANAMA, MURDER CRUISE and CASTLE IN THE DESERT. Also, although many extras are included, others weren't. Granted, I shouldn't be all that surprised, but I took a chance. Did anyone else go down the same road as I did? Am I going to have to get the fifth boxed set to fill up the gaps? "I live the unknown, I love the unknown... I AM the unknown."

Just recently got my hands on the McFarland book Charlie Chan at the Movies, which I'm really looking forward to reading!

The author was miffed, though, that McFarland wouldn't let him correct a couple of minor errors before they put out the trade paperback edition. Didn't want to pay for new printing plates.

Jun 29 10 4:27 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I like Ken Hanke's book too, though it's probably a little dated being overly heavy on plot summaries - 20 years ago when the book was written, the films weren't as accessible as just popping in the DVD. Still I agree with most of his points of view on the Chans, even if I'm a little less harsh on some of them . I happen to think he does a great job on some of the Fox films doing DVD commentary with John Cork.

As bare bones as it was, and as short as the films are, that four disc set could have probably been released as just a double DVD set of double features. I'm also surprised Sidney Toler's 1945 Chan film THE RED DRAGON has been overlooked in the DVD sets. There was a guy at Monster Bash this past weekend selling a DVD (or maybe DVD-R) grey market Chan double bill of that film paired with BLACK MAGIC (aka MEETING AT MIDNIGHT).

Jul 3 10 1:13 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Just a heads up that there's a very good chance that "Red Dragon" (and the other remaining Chans) will appear on Vol 2 of a TCM Spotlight collection. Warners has these films on tap for commercial release; they were awaiting results of Vol 1's sales. From most accounts, Vol 1 was a success.
