They are a huge step forward in how Asians were played in film in the USA. Perfect no but a good first step up from either being played as morons, villains or both. Now Willie Best in the two Olands he's in, I'm sorry THAT'S racist and very offensive. I don't think you can defend those characters but it's only 2/23 of the Fox films. I would consider Mantan Moreland a bit harder to take, but it's not clear it would have been offensive at the time.

Jul 15 12 5:25 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I actually found Mantan Moreland to be more laid back than either Willie Best or Steppin Fetchit. The parts they played were unpleasant and demeaning, but Mantan could be delightfully sassy. I enjoyed him, and would have liked to see more. What is more offensive to me is Leila Bennett, playing a slovenly, stupid maid in BLACKFACE. Now THAT is REALLY offensive. "E" Your Signature ... "....I do hope he won't upset Henry..."

Roland Winters is clearly trying to do an update of Warner Oland, with faster dialogue to show the character's ability to think in English is improving. He's just not that great in the part sadly.

I was trying to get the family to do the "Drac-Frank-Talbot" canonic run with me this week. Plus I didn't realize that The Mummy was showing tonight, although we did watch our own copy of it last night.

Can ANYBODY (Tom Weaver?) tell me why Boris Karloff's THE MUMMY had a rating of TV-14 LV (language and violence), while CHARLIE CHAN IN EGYPT was rated G? Stepin Fetchit's performance was repulsive, and Thomas Beck's performance was downright nasty. He didn't use the "N' word, but the way he treated Fetchit's character more than made up for it. I find it quite amazing that the "PC Police" will go after Warner Oland...who plays a character of intelligence and dignity, and yet pretty much ignores the Beck and Fetchit performances. Oct 1 12 9:46 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Technical question: I recorded CHARLIE CHAN IN EGYPT and just checked to make it recorded OK (TCM and/or Comcast have gotten a bit wonky with their programmed record start-end times) and I noticed the credits were very generic looking, almost like a 'Castle Films Presents Warner Oland in CHARLIE CHAN IN EGYPT' credit sequence. There also seems to be a cut before the film proper begins. Is this the original this was presented, or is it a re-release version?

Heh - getting his next Tanna fix is all that seems to drive Tyler's Kharis in HAND. He couldn't give two jackals for Anaka, tomb defilers, or cracking the world with anger.

They have a glass case devoted to Charlie Chan and Chang Apana, including a great photo of Oland and Apana from 1931. The next 5 photos are from the wonderful restaurant, "House Without a Key" which is right on the beach at the Halekulani hotel. Great food! The final five photos are from the Royal Hawaiian Hotel where Oland and Bela Lugosi filmed "The Black Camel". You will note some of the areas in the lobby and surrounding area are the same areas filmed in the movie (though I can't remember the exact spots) Great little half-day we spent looking at Chan-lore! ***May take a little time to upload and view pics. So, just to throw it out there... any word on the future of the remaining couple of Toler and most of the Roland Winters Chans showing up on DVD? The last I recall was that the TCM set exceeded sales expectations and another set was in the works, but that was a few years ago now, hopefully they at least show up via Warner Archives.

Yes Stepin is racist, horribly offensive and sad to watch that anyone would demean themselves and their culture that much for money. He's almost as bad in Charlie Chan at the Race Track. Mantan Moreland is Morgan Freeman compared to this guy.

May 17 13 5:25 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	from The Digital Bits site (dated 05/14/13).... "Warner Home Video has announced the Charlie Chan Collection for DVD release on 8/6 (SRP $39.92). The set will include Shadows Over Chinatown, Docks of New Orleans, The Shanghai Chest and The Golden Eye. All will be remastered." That leaves The Red Dragon, The Feathered Serpent and The Sky Dragon as the only existing Chans still unreleased.
