Once you start talking about Valhalla and supersized super soldiers and jolly green giants it warrants much further discussion." I believe Downey is correct. Non-comic book fans/geeks -- the vast majority of the audience that made IRON MAN such a mega-blockbuster -- are simply not going to accept "magic" (i.e. Thor) being brought into an Iron Man/Avengers "movieverse". Science fiction stuff is okay, but mixing in the supernatural isn't going to fly. All fine and good to make a Thor flick, but it'll have to stay separate. If memory serves, the original Avengers stories dealt with this very problem by not dwelling on Thor's "mystical" aspects very much at all -- he was pretty much just a big strong guy in a cape, a sort of surrogate Superman figure. Seems to me that a savvy guy like Favreau could play with an audience's natural skepticism and/or ignorance of Thor's mythological underpinnings by keeping his origins more mysterious, which might actually work to the film's advantage. I suspect that with sundry pseudo-scientific elements going on in a film like this anyway ('super-soldier serum', 'gamma rays', etc.), rationalizing 'magic' will need to take a back seat to interpersonal relationships anyway. Remember, it's Tony Stark and Nick Fury cameos that seem to stoke the audiences, not Iron Man and heli-carriers per se. And lets not underestimate the forgiving nature of the youngest generation, who have been bombarded with the casual fusion of Science & Magic for decades now, via Anime, Role Playing Games, Harry Potter, and entry level fodder like The Fairly Oddparents or PowerPuff Girls. I don't think it's going to be a very tuff sell at all.

Part of Indy's problem was the bait & switch, have your cake and eat it too approach to science fact vs. fantasy. I still think that they can keep Thor enigmatic, like Dr. Who, and let the audience's imagination fill in the details. The best stories let the viewer do the heavy lifting. With a proven track record in both pseudo-science (IRON MAN) and contemporary fantasy (ELF), I think Favreau just might be the guy to pull it off. A lot depends, of course, on the reaction to the upcoming WATCHMEN wild card, which might be either another DARK KNIGHT or another MYSTERY MEN. It'll be interesting to see which.

Nov 27 08 12:00 PM More My Recent Posts	Marvel is being very ambitious on its long journey to the AVENGERS film. Three or possibly four still to be made films will precede it and each one needs to be successful. If THOR fails or the next HULK is met with a ho-hum, it won't bode well for this long-range investment. But I like the risk they're taking and hope it will pay off.

The Asgardians are aliens/extradimensional beings who were WORSHIPPED as "gods" by the primitive Norse folks, and the Asgardians went along with it as an "ego stroke".

Nov 29 08 3:52 AM More My Recent Posts	I don't think audiences will have trouble dealing with a being who can lift a city bus over his head for mystical reasons when he's standing alongside a guy who is also holding a city bus over his head due to his exposure to gamma rays...who also happens to be 3 feet taller than him and forest green. If people really want to be this picky about when and how they choose to suspend their disbelief then nuts to them,they don't have to see the film. Do you think audiences in 1977 were spellbound by all of STAR WARS sci fi trappings of protocol droids, light speed jumping ships, planet sized death rays and interstellar dogfights only to witness the first hints of Jedi mysticism with an insulted bewilderment? "Get your coats kids...this Death Star project i can buy but this wizardry stuff is some far fetched horses**t"". Nobody can use that tired "todays audiences are more sophisticated" routine. Whenever i am in a theater these days,the people i am surrounded by seem as sophisticated as a Hustler cartoon.Ticket buyers will either have fun or not. The cast of HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3 aren't teenage millionaires because the general public are discriminating about their cinema fare. Lets not forget the X Men are a part of the Marvel movie universe and about 90% of those characters have abilities that transcend "comic book science" and head straight into "pure fantasy". A devilish figure who can teleport anywhere, a man who turns into living steel, a woman who flies and controls the weather (!!!) and their leader who has laser beams constantly emitting from his skull. Compared to the X mens roster, Thor seems almost logical.

I predict we'll be seeing Black Widow in Iron Man 2, and again in the Avengers. I don't think we'll be seeing Ant Man and The Wasp because Edgar Wright's Ant Man movie won't be made in time. I predict Loki will be the main villain in The Avengers, carried over from Thor. He will be in some sort of human guise, maybe as an army general or a politician, playing into the worlds of Cap and Tony Stark. He will use The Hulk as a pawn in the first half of the movie, leading to a big mid-movie fight scene where a freshly thawed Cap shows off his bad-ass-ness by being the only one able to bring him down. Tony Stark's father will be involved in the super soldier program in Cap's movie, giving Tony and Cap something to bond over. The Cap movie would need an Indiana Jones style Macguffin. Thor's hammer maybe? And for the big third act battle royale, how about an Asgardian invasion of earth? Manipulated by Loki of course. There was a story arc in Thor in the early 70's by Gerry Conway and John Buscema that had a big army vs. Asgard finale that would be very cool in a movie. The Asgardian Invasion finale is probably wishful thinking given the realities of movie budgets, but I'll bet I'm right about the other things.
