(09/15/08 6:25 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	I searched all over the boards and couldn't find a thread on Spectre, the 1977 TV movie starring Robert Culp and Gig Young as supernatural investigators. All I could find were a few mentions of it withing the TV movie threads. So, here is a thread for Spectre. Spectre was a TV movie produced by Gene Rodenberry and looked like it could have been a pilot (much in the same way The Norliss Tapes was meant as a pilot). Because it is unreleased, I tracked down a DVD-r, which arrived today. I just finished watching it and thought it was pretty cool. Great to see Culp and Young (who sadly seemed in ill health) fighting Asmodeaus (sp?), a succubus, a hairy monster with fangs, devil worshipers, and more! I found Anybody else a fan of Spectre?

Culp is fantastic; he could be such a powerful, imposing actor at times. I think Young was an alcoholic, hence the way he looks. I believe this was his last American production, but I'm not 100% sure. "The important question is not, are there aliens on other worlds? No. The important question is, do they have ray guns?"

They even worked his drinking into the script, but it was sad to see him looking/sounding like that. I agree Cap, Culp is awesome in this and everything else I've seen him in (Columbo and The Outer Limits come to mind).

So the quality of these DVD-Rs from Cinefear is decent, Rak? Will have to check their website out, see what else they've got. I want to see the 2 telefilms with Louis Jourdan (FEAR NO EVIL and RITUAL OF EVIL), plus THE BERMUDA DEPTHS, A COLD NIGHT'S DEATH (also with Culp) and a handful of others. I remember Dr. Paul Armstrong mentioning that he and his wife had purchased several films off this site (as has Old Manster) and saying that the quality varies depending on the source. I also am thinking of getting those Louis Jordan movies! I've never seen them, but have been reading about them in my new book, Television Fright Films Of The 70's by David Deal (McFarland Books). Back to Gig Young, I just read this sad and shocking comment regarding his appearance in Spectre (in the a fore mentioned McFarland book, Television Fright Films Of The 70's by David Deal): "Dr. Hamilton is played for a bit more humor by Oscar winner Gig Young, in his second-to-last film. The Following year, Young shot his new bride and then committed suicide at the age of 64." Man, I had no idea Gig Young killed himself, let alone shot his wife. Jesus! Sad way for Young to go out...never can understand why so many suicidal people (men, mostly) have to take their loved ones with them. His wife, Kim Schmidt, apparently had an uncredited part (as a police woman) in SPECTRE as well. Married for 3 weeks when he killed her. She was only 23. Several things could be inferred from that scenario (older, alcoholic husband married to a much younger starlet)...real shame.

This is supposedly the same fate that actor Albert Salmi and his wife shared. Here is a quote from his imdb page; "The deaths of Albert and Roberta Salmi were reported as murder-suicide. They were reported to have been addicted to sleeping pills. His wife reportedly mistreated at least one of their daughters on more than one occasion." My whole life I've been playing jacks with a square ball.

It used to turn up on SciFi once in awhile. It's quite good, and I would like to have seen it become a series. Gene Roddenberry talks about it in David Gerrold's "World of Star Trek."

(09/16/08 7:00 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	I got the two Jourdan Evil films from Cinefear. While Fear No Evil looks pretty good, Ritual is terrible. It's from a Sci-Fi Channel broadcast and the picture flutters uncontrollably whenever there is a scene with a bright light source (I imagine this is due to a VHS tracking problem). I also got Vampire from them (Richard Lynch), and that's pretty good. Spectre I got from an ebay seller who got the copy off a Fox airing, and it is gorgeous. If anyone would like copies, PM me. The best quality disk are those that are copied from the Canadian Scream channel (but you have to suffer through the logo at the bottom right), and those that come from the BBC (Ghost Stories for Christmas eps are a bit oversaturated; The Stone Tapes and The Nightmare Man are pretty well perfect). I've bought gray market disks from several sources, and for the most part, Cinefear product has averaged the best quality print. "Quality" of course is in the eye of the beholder. ... Reed
