I think that Wuthering Heights qualifies, not sure if its been mentioned, as I've just skimmed the thread. I didn't see it. Nor did I see It's a Wonderful Life, or another from Frank Capra, Lost Horizon.

There's a scene or two in the 1949 crime thriller Follow Me Quietly that surely qualifies.

The character of Moose Malloy in the 1944 Murder, My Sweet, is so large as to be larger than life. He turns up at odd moments, does strange things, feels at times like either a man from another world or a man with "special qualifies", albeit not virtuous ones.

"Single and subtle nods" in the aforementioned films? In some cases not, yet overall they're straight, mainstream films, neither horror, fantasy or sci-fi, that utilize supernatural elements.

Another one (a maybe): Shane, in which, at the end, Shane seems nearly super-human as he takes out the bad guys, yet vulnerable and (literally) wounded, the way he rides off, with the little boy chasing after him, calling out his name, which might suggest to some viewers (it did to me) that Shane is perhaps a spectral figure, literally a ghost, an avenging angel sent down from the heavens to save the homesteaders. It's like they were praying for a savior and God granted them one, a man already dead, who came back to life for a while and then, perforce, vanished, as his work was done. Yet for all this, the movie is otherwise realistic, without a trace of the supernatural.

The film's director, George Steven, a couple of years earlier, in A Place In the Sun, also managed to at times to suggest the workings of Fate in the case of its main character, played by Montgomery Clift. There were little hints here and there,--natural sounds, bird calls, moments of dead silence--that suggested forces at work beyond the control of the film's main character. It's an odd, beautiful movie, not to everyone's tastes, that gives off some strange vibes along with the usual romantic and dramatic goings on and maneuverings.

Okay. Fair enough, Rick: how's about Hitchcock's Rebecca, with its haunting portrait of Max de Winter's dead wife? A "nod to the supernatural" inasmuch as her still living husband's appears to be haunted (but not literally) but her spirit; and this gets to his second wife, too, which makes it at times feel like a ghost story without a real ghost.

I sense a nod to the supernatural at times at various moments in John Huston's all-star (really all guest star) List Of Adrian Messenger, which features a lot of creepy scenes but never suggests supernatural forces at work in any literal sense. The murderer, however, is so diabolically clever as to make it appear so. The way the hounds bayed at the death of the bad guy, a sign that he really was a member of the family he was insinuating himself into and plotting against, gave me goosebumps.
